This position has a term length of 1 year plus 1 day.

Location - This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.

The Clinical Research Coordinator is responsible for assisting and supporting the Clinical Research Manager in the overall operations and management of current and upcoming externally funded and Investigator-initiated drug studies and other neuromuscular/ALS research studies within the Division of Neurology. This position works as a contributing study team member with other research coordinators, physicians, lab personnel, and stakeholders of the research.

Duties include, but are not limited to: assisting in the preparation of pre-study documentation preparation of applications for Health Research Ethics Board approval, preparation of patient information and informed consent sheets, patient screening, interviewing and recruitment, obtaining patient informed consent, completing patient enrolment, conducting study visits and collection of study data, maintaining and dispensing drug supplies, completing case report forms, maintaining source documents, ensuring and maintaining site quality, ongoing Health Research Ethics Board Interaction and communication, collection of laboratory specimens, handling and shipping of laboratory specimens, documentation of safety events and notification of the Clinical Research Manager, Principal Investigator, and other authorities as required.

Administrative

  • Prepares informed consent forms, protocols, patient Information, study progress updates and safety reporting for submission to the Health Research Ethics Board (HREB) for approval
  • Provides ongoing written and oral reporting with the University Health Ethics Research Office (ARISE) and Northern Alberta Clinical Trials and Research Centre (NACTRC), investigators and industry sponsors
  • Attends virtual or in-person meetings to maintain expertise in the study protocol and be up to date with any protocol amendments or challenges (Potential international travel)
  • Ensures safe and effective operating procedures and processing systems
  • Establishes effective partnership and communication for study implementation
  • Maintain and organize multiple study binders according to Health Canada and/or Food and Drug Administration specifications
  • Maintaining calendars for multiple PI and research roles
  • Ensure documentation for all trials is up-to-date and signed by appropriate authorities
  • Ability to effectively manage/coordinate simultaneous projects and successfully prioritize multiple tasks to meet deadlines.
  • A commitment to, and participation in, professional growth.
  • Assigned training duties by Clinical Research Manager or PI to train research assistants and/or students.


Research

  • Interact with people experiencing complex medical conditions in a compassionate, professional manner
  • Provide high-level concise summaries for team members, supervisors, and shareholders
  • Data entry, query resolution
  • Retains study records in accordance with sponsor requirements and the Alberta Health Services and University policies and procedures
  • Implement recruitment strategies within study protocols under the guidance of PIs and senior team members
  • Enrolls patients in the study groups and explains the study procedures, consent processes, and writes advertisements to assist with patient recruitment
  • Conduct evaluations of outcome measures according to sponsor requirements and UofA policies as required for all trials requiring said
  • Assist with safe patient transfers and other duties related to patient care as required and appropriate

    lifting and carrying up to 50kg, walking 2 km, standing for extended periods of time and hands-on assisting patients as required

  • Good hand-eye coordination for evaluating outcome measures (respiratory testing, handheld
    dynamometry, etc.)

Clinical Trial Experience

  • Familiarity with neuromuscular diseases (ALS, SMA, FSHD) (asset)
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • TCPS 2: CORE (Course on Research Ethics) certification
  • Alberta Health Services HIA Awareness training
  • Good Clinical Practice and Health Canada Division 5 training (asset)
  • Medical research with human participants, including ethics submissions
  • NACTRC experience
  • ConnectCare experience (asset)

Technology Skills

  • Bibliographic management software (e.g., EndNote)
  • REDCap and clinical trials platforms (EDC, data entry)
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
  • Video conferencing platforms
