Electrical Design Specialist
Location: Saint John, NB (25% travel required)
Department: Engineering
Reporting to: Technical Manager - Terminal Operations
Contract type: Full Time, Permanent
Working hours: 5 days a week, 40 hours per week

ABOUT THE ROLE:
Greenergy Fuels Canada is seeking an experienced Instrumentation & Controls Engineer to support the reliability, safety, and efficiency of plant operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, and optimization of instrumentation, control systems, and automation technologies used in fuel production, storage, and distribution facilities. This role plays a critical part in ensuring process stability, regulatory compliance, and continuous operational improvement.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design, develop, and maintain instrumentation and process control systems for fuel production and terminal operations.
- Configure, program, troubleshoot, and optimize Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Human Machine Interfaces (HMI), and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.
- Develop and maintain control philosophies, instrument specifications, control narratives, loop drawings, cause and effect matrices, and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
- Support plant commissioning, startup, shutdown, and system upgrades.
- Perform calibration, testing, and troubleshooting of field instrumentation including pressure, temperature, flow, level, analytical instruments, and control valves.
- Conduct root cause investigations for instrumentation and automation failures and implement corrective actions.
- Support preventive and predictive maintenance programs to improve equipment reliability and minimize downtime.
- Ensure compliance with electrical, instrumentation, process safety, and environmental regulations and company standards.
- Participate in Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) studies, Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA), and Management of Change (MOC) processes.
- Evaluate new technologies and recommend automation improvements to increase operational efficiency and process reliability.
- Collaborate with operations, maintenance, engineering, and project teams to support capital projects and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Prepare technical reports, engineering calculations, equipment specifications, and project documentation.
- Provide technical guidance and training to operations and maintenance personnel.
SKILLS/ATTRIBUTES REQUIRED:
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Canada or eligibility for registration.
- Minimum 7–10 years of experience in electrical design and project execution within the oil & gas, petrochemical, bulk storage, terminal, industrial, or related sectors.
- Strong experience in low-voltage power distribution, motor control, transformers, cable sizing, and industrial electrical systems.
- Demonstrated experience in electrical installation/construction support, field commissioning, and field troubleshooting.
- Working knowledge of hazardous area electrical design and installation requirements.
- Familiarity with PLC/HMI systems, industrial communications, and control system integration.
- Familiarity with project execution from conceptual design through detailed engineering, construction, and commissioning.
- Knowledge of project management methodologies (PMBOK or equivalent) is an asset.
- Experience in cost estimation and capital planning for terminal, industrial, or infrastructure projects.
- Ability to engage with regulators, contractors, vendors, and client representatives.
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 50% across Canada and the United States.
- French language ability considered an asset for cross-Canadian projects.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility for registration in Canada is considered an asset.
- Minimum of 3 to 7 years of experience in instrumentation, process controls, or industrial automation within the oil and gas, fuels, renewable energy, chemical, or manufacturing industries.
- Strong knowledge of PLC programming, DCS, SCADA, HMI, industrial communication protocols, and process control principles.
- Experience with instrumentation calibration, control valves, transmitters, analyzers, and field devices.
- Familiarity with industrial communication networks such as Modbus, Profibus, Foundation Fieldbus, Ethernet/IP, or OPC.
- Knowledge of Canadian electrical codes, safety regulations, and industry standards.
- Experience with functional safety systems and Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) is considered an asset.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem solving skills.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and project management skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and engineering software applications.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with Emerson DeltaV, Honeywell Experion, Siemens PCS 7, Rockwell Automation, ABB, Yokogawa, or similar industrial control systems.
- Knowledge of fuel terminals, petroleum refining, biodiesel, renewable diesel, ethanol, or bulk liquid storage operations.
- Familiarity with ISA standards, IEC 61511, and cybersecurity practices for industrial control systems.
- Experience supporting continuous improvement, reliability engineering, and automation modernization projects.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced operational environment.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed in both office and industrial plant environments.
- Regular field inspections requiring the use of appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Occasional travel to production facilities and terminals may be required.
- Participation in on call support, emergency response, and planned shutdown activities may be required.
Additional Information
This role requires up to 25% travel across Canada and the United States.
