Full job description

Associate / Senior Associate, M&A Advisory

Compensation: $75,000 - $95,000/year

Location: Vancouver, BC

Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent

Smythe LLP is seeking an experienced and strategic Associate or Senior Associate, M&A Advisory to play a key role in the firm's M&A advisory practice, supporting the execution of transaction engagements. This role is ideal for a collaborative, client-focused professional who thrives in a dynamic environment and enjoys working through financial analysis, supporting transaction execution, and helping deliver practical advice to clients.

This role is based in our Downtown Vancouver office, with the opportunity to work in a hybrid environment following the completion of the probationary period.

The Opportunity

In this role, you will support a range of M&A engagements, including business sale processes, acquisition advisory, financial modelling, valuation analysis, buyer research, transaction marketing materials, due diligence coordination, quality of earnings-style analysis, and related transaction support. Our recent work mix has tended to include more sell-side advisory, but the role will be responsive to the needs of the group and the transactions we are engaged on.

In this role, you will:

  • Assist with the execution of M&A advisory and transaction support engagements, including sell-side mandates, acquisition advisory, due diligence, financial modelling, and related work.
  • Prepare and analyze financial models, valuation analyses, comparable company data, precedent transaction data, and other financial analysis.
  • Review and analyze financial statements, management reporting, working capital trends, earnings quality, and key business drivers.
  • Assist with the preparation of confidential information memorandums, teasers, management presentations, buyer lists, and other transaction materials.
  • Conduct industry, market, company, and buyer research to support transaction strategy and client deliverables.
  • Support due diligence processes, including data room organization, information requests, buyer questions, quality of earnings-style analysis, and coordination with clients and other advisors.
  • Participate in client meetings, management discussions, internal deal discussions, and business development initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively with partners, managers, and other team members to deliver high-quality, practical advice to clients.

What You Bring

  • Two to three years of experience in public practice, corporate finance, M&A advisory, transaction services, valuations, audit, accounting, or another financial analysis-focused role.
  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, commerce, business, economics, or a related field.
  • CPA designation, progress toward a CPA designation, or interest in pursuing a CFA or CBV designation is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of financial statements, accounting concepts, business drivers, and financial analysis.
  • Experience with Excel-based financial modelling and analysis. Experience with valuation, transaction, or quality of earnings analysis is an asset.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear and professional client-facing materials.
  • High attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
  • A practical, curious, and client-focused approach to problem solving.
  • Commercial curiosity, sound judgment, and comfort working through ambiguity in a transaction-focused environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to work from our Downtown Vancouver office, with a hybrid schedule available following probation.
  • Availability to work additional hours during peak periods.
  • Commitment to maintaining a consistent work schedule to support client and team needs.
