Full job description

About Us

Recon Metal is a growing Alberta scrap metal recycling company with operations in Calgary, Edmonton, and Medicine Hat. We're looking for a practical, hands-on Health & Safety Advisor to support and improve our safety program while working closely with employees and supervisors in an active industrial environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day health and safety support to employees, supervisors and management.
  • Conduct inspections, hazard assessments, and safety observations.
  • Assist with incident investigations and corrective action tracking.
  • Maintain health and safety policies, procedures, records, and training documentation.
  • Support COR maintenance, audit preparation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Administer and support electronic safety management systems (SALUS, SiteDocs, or similar).
  • Deliver orientations, training support, and safety program administration.
  • Work closely with the Operations/Safety Manager to continually improve Recon Metal's overall health and safety management system.

Travel Requirements

Travel is limited and is expected to average approximately three to five days per month, consisting of:

  • Approximately one to two days per month in Medicine Hat; and
  • Approximately two to three days per month in Edmonton.

Travel can generally be accomplished through day trips, limiting the number of nights away.
The remainder of the position will be based primarily at Recon Metal's Calgary operation.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of occupational health and safety experience in an industrial, manufacturing, construction, transportation, recycling, or similar environment.
  • Experience with inspections, hazard assessments, and incident investigations.
  • Working knowledge of Alberta occupational health and safety legislation and accepted industry practices.
  • Practical experience supporting workers and supervisors in an active workplace rather than working exclusively in an administrative safety role.
  • Strong safety-program administration and documentation skills.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and computer skills.
  • Experience with electronic safety management systems is an asset.
  • Valid driver's licence and ability to travel occasionally within Alberta.

A certificate, diploma or degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a related discipline is preferred. Professional safety certifications or designations such as CRST, CRSP, NCSO or equivalent would be considered an asset but are not mandatory.

Energy Safety Canada Auditor Qualification

Current certification as an Energy Safety Canada Certified Health and Safety Auditor (CHSA) is considered a strong asset.

Candidates who are not currently certified must be eligible and willing to complete the Energy Safety Canada Certified Health and Safety Auditor program and qualification process after joining Recon Metal.

Recon Metal is looking for someone who can ultimately participate in the company's internal COR audit and continuous-improvement process, so an interest in auditing and safety management systems is important to this position.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary: $83,000-$96,000 annually, depending on qualifications and experience
  • Comprehensive benefits package
  • 4% employer RRSP matching
  • Three weeks' vacation
  • Recognized statutory holidays
  • Primarily Calgary-based position with limited travel
  • Opportunity to play a meaningful role in the development and improvement of Recon Metal's safety systems
  • Opportunity to become qualified as an Energy Safety Canada Certified Health and Safety Auditor
  • A position with direct access to operational management and the ability to influence how safety is managed across the organization

Who We're Looking For

We're looking for a hands-on safety professional who enjoys working with people, identifying hazards, solving problems, and ensuring follow-through on safety initiatives. The ideal candidate is comfortable both in the field and with safety administration, and is ready to make a meaningful impact on our safety program. Suitable for an experienced Safety Advisor I seeking growth or a Safety Advisor II looking for a stable, Calgary-based opportunity.

Apply

Interested candidates should submit a current resume outlining their occupational health and safety experience, relevant training and certifications, experience with electronic safety-management platforms, and any COR or auditing experience.

Pay: $83,000.00-$96,000.00 per year

Benefits:

  • Extended health care
  • Paid time off
  • RRSP match

Work Location: In person
