The role / What are we looking for?
We are seeking an experienced Project Accountant to play a critical role in our projects, requiring a solid understanding of financial accounting principles, exceptional attention to detail, and a thorough understanding of the architecture, engineering, or construction (AEC) industry. This role will be responsible for maintaining high-quality financial deliverables from project initiation through completion, under the guidance and support of the Financial Controller and the leadership team. The ideal candidate is highly analytical, resourceful, and organized, with demonstrated experience in project accounting and financial management within the AEC industry.
Success in this role requires a natural orientation towards collaboration and teamwork, as well as the ability to work independently on financial deliverables. This position is best suited for an experienced Project Accountant who strives for financial accuracy and has the ability to work end-to-end on project financials.
You will support the Management team in maintaining relationships and meeting the financial needs of clients, consultants, contractors, and trades. Ultimately, you will contribute to the financial health and success of our projects, ensuring the delivery of high-quality financial solutions across a variety of project typologies.

Select key responsibilities:
Project Accounting:

  • Effectively communicate with Project Managers (PM) and Principals-in-Charge (PIC) regarding contract documents, change orders, and other contract modifications; approvals, and any additional services related to billing.
  • Generate and analyze monthly project profitability reports and provide insightful commentary based on performance.
  • Review project budgets, resource assignment, and work plans and ensure the appropriate fee structure is in place.
  • Assess and pursue opportunities for maximization of client billing through the duration of a project.
  • Prepare billing schedules and revenue forecasts for the project and identify any risks with PICs and PMs.
  • Issue invoices for revenue, consultants, and expenses and follow-up on outstanding client receivables, escalating collection issues as required.
  • Enter consultant invoices in the company system and ensure they are aligned with project budgets, flagging any issues early with PMs or PICs.
  • Track and respond to matters related to payment provisions under the New Construction Act, ensuring compliance.
  • Review and resolve any unbilled issues to optimize the billing revenue.
  • Set up new projects, make transfers of employee billable hours and/or expenses, and open and close time phases within the company system.
  • Write off any uncollectible receivables, labor, or expenses, as directed by PIC.
  • Prepare balance sheet account reconciliations, as directed by the Financial Controller.
  • Prepare special project analyses for the PICs, PMs, and others as required.
  • Provide year-end support of auditor requirements, which may include research and reconciliations.

Project Coordination & Management Support:

  • Support the translation of project financial requirements through all phases of a project to completion, ensuring adherence to financial standards and accuracy.
  • Work with the PM or PIC to set financial priorities, establish and maintain a work schedule, and proactively report on the status of job cost control and financial issues.
  • Contribute to the project risk assessment process, proactively identifying and communicating risks and mitigation strategies to support the resolution of project-related financial concerns.
  • Assist in the development of project quality plans and updates to effectively manage project finances, including phase milestone reviews.
  • Work in collaboration with the PM or PIC to manage/align financial aspirations with client goals, project budget, schedule, and team.

Candidate Profile + Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of project accounting experience, preferably within the architecture, engineering, or construction industry.
  • CPA Designated, or currently pursuing.
  • Proven experience in financial project management, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and financial management systems such as Deltek Vantagepoint.
  • Highly analytical and possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task while managing competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Detail-oriented with a keen eye for financial accuracy and integrity.
