Full job description

The Accountant provides administrative and operational support to the Finance team at Atlantic Community Shelters Society (ACSS), helping to ensure accurate and reliable financial records. In this role, you will focus on processing routine financial transactions, supporting effective financial management, and assisting with the overall financial operations of the organization. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Accounting Clerk contributes to the smooth and efficient functioning of the finance department. Success in this role requires a solid understanding of fundamental accounting principles, payroll processing, proficiency with accounting software, strong organizational skills, and meticulous attention to detail. The position also calls for strong communication and analytical abilities, along with a high degree of professionalism, integrity, and discretion when handling confidential financial information.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions, including invoices, payments, and reconciliations to ensure accurate financial records.
  • Enter and maintain vendor invoices within the accounting system and prepare payments for approval in accordance with organizational procedures.
  • Record general ledger entries and maintain organized, up-to-date financial documentation.
  • Assist with bank reconciliations and support month-end and year-end closing activities.
  • Support the preparation of financial reports and maintain finance-related spreadsheets, reports, and documentation.
  • Process bi-weekly payroll for both hourly and salaried employees across multiple work sites, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential payroll records
  • Prepare, issue, and submit Records of Employment and year-end reporting, including T4 slips.
  • Provide general administrative and operational support to the Finance department as required.
  • Ensure adherence to organizational policies, accounting procedures, and regulatory requirements while maintaining strict confidentiality when handling sensitive financial information.

What we are looking for:

  • Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, is required
  • Working toward CGA or CPA designation is an asset
  • 2+ years of relevant experience in a finance or accounting role.
  • Strong understanding of basic bookkeeping principles, with the ability to accurately calculate, record, and post financial transactions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite applications and Excel required.
  • Experience processing payroll required.
  • Proficiency in English and strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy when working with financial information.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and demonstrate professionalism when handling sensitive information.
  • Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as part of a team.

Rate of Pay:$28-$32 per hour depending on experience
