OPERATIONS MANAGER

ABOUT AFC CONSTRUCTION

AFC Construction is a locally owned and operated construction company based in Courtenay, BC. Since our founding in 2004, we've delivered project management, construction management, general contracting, and design-build services.

Our work ranges from high-end residential and multi-unit family developments to a broad portfolio of commercial projects, plus light industrial work and civic projects. JOB SUMMARY

As the Operations Manager, you'll oversee all field operations across our projects, ensuring efficient execution, strict adherence to safety standards, and outstanding client satisfaction. You'll work closely with our project managers and site superintendents to implement project plans, maintain reasonable schedules, and allocate resources effectively.

Beyond the day-to-day execution, you'll provide mentorship and guidance to field personnel and foster a positive, safe, and accountable work environment. You'll have a direct hand in the outcomes of our projects and in shaping how AFC Construction delivers for its clients across Vancouver Island.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership

  • Communicate AFC’s purpose, values, and strategic plans, internally and externally.
  • Establish and monitor processes that promote AFC’s culture and vision, including ethics, code of conduct, and health & safety.
  • Monitor day-to-day performance and the work of direct reports, including regular touchpoints with staff on key deadlines or initiatives.
  • Build and foster positive relationships with AFC team members, clients, subcontractors, and other stakeholders.

Field Management

  • Oversee all field operations and ensure efficient execution of construction projects.
  • Collaborate with the senior project manager, project managers, and site superintendents to effectively develop and implement project plans, schedules, and resource allocations, including labour, equipment, and materials.
  • Enforce quality control measures to meet project specifications and client expectations.
  • Create a safety-first work environment, including compliance with safety regulations, conducting inspections, and providing training as needed.
  • Monitor project budgets and identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Identify and mitigate potential project risks to ensure success, including providing prompt solutions to any issues.
  • Guide and mentor field staff to foster a positive work environment and enhance overall team performance.

Business Development and Client Management

  • Cultivate, nurture and maintain relationships with key clients to manage expectations and create transparency throughout project timelines
  • Attend industry events, conferences, and trade shows to network with potential clients and partners.

People Management

  • Lead recruitment and onboarding process for all new field employees.
  • Prepare, modify, and deliver job descriptions, clear expectations, and performance evaluations to direct reports as required.
  • Engage in conflict resolution and work with managers, staff, and clients to resolve issues.
  • Manage and coordinate people, equipment, and material resources.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • 8+ years’ experience in the construction industry.
  • 5+ years’ experience as a site superintendent or site experience, ideally managing complex projects with multiple teams and shared resources.
  • High school diploma or equivalent. BCIT Technologist diploma, trade school certification, or a bachelor degree in construction management, project management, engineering, architecture, business administration, or a related field is an asset.
  • Advanced understanding of construction management concepts including contracts, budgeting, scoping, scheduling, and quality control.
  • Prior experience working directly with construction plans, building layouts, documentation, etc.
  • Proven track record of managing to deadline and overall excellent time management skills, including managing multiple projects at once.
  • Prior experience in a people leadership capacity, including mentorship and coaching
  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal, and ability to mediate conflict effectively.
  • Experience with Procore, Sage, and other construction software is considered an asset.
