Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is inviting application for one permanent, full-time position of Traffic Sign and Marking Technician with the Traffic Management division of Public Works.

Under the direction of the Works Supervisor, Sign Shop, Traffic Management, the successful incumbent will erect traffic, guide, information, and street name signs; paint markings such as centerlines, lane lines, etc. The incumbent will use their welding and acetylene cutting skills during the installation and maintenance of traffic, and other municipal signage.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Erect traffic, guide, information, street name and other municipal signage as per regulations and provide maintenance as required.
  • Paint centre lines, lane lines, channelization, bike lanes, etc.
  • Perform welding and acetylene cutting duties associated with the installation and maintenance of traffic and pedestrian signs.
  • Perform traffic control duties around the paint truck to ensure the safety of the travelling public.
  • Install sign bases, jack hammering and concrete work.
  • Sets up, maintains and cleans equipment, including hoses and hose caps for the loading of paint and glass beads.
  • Operates paint pump and glass suction loading device for loading material.
  • Must have a good attendance and work record.
  • Must have the ability to work night shift as required.
  • Responsible for the care and maintenance of any assigned vehicle and equipment.
  • Highly adaptable to change and ability to function in a fast paced environment.
  • Must be able to work with minimum supervision.
  • Must have ability to pass a Security Clearance and Child Abuse Registry; provide current Driver Abstract.
  • Work safely and cooperatively assisting other classifications.
  • Contribute to meeting the operational objectives of the business unit and HRM.
  • Other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have a valid Nova Scotia Class 5 drivers’ license with a clean driving record.
  • Must have valid Nova Scotia traffic control person (TCP) and temporary workplace signing (TWS) certification, or the ability to obtain within the probation/trial period.
  • Must have the ability to obtain a NS Class 3 drivers’ license with air brake endorsement.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in acetylene cutting and arc welding equipment, mobile paint spraying equipment, centre lining equipment and installation / maintenance of traffic signs.
  • Experience working within or near live traffic lanes.
  • Experience operating light tuck / trailer combination, Condition 15 endorsement considered an asset.
  • Experience operating a skid steer with multiple attachments (bucked, auger, etc.) considered an asset.


Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Good communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Experience in the use of arc welding equipment and acetylene cutting torch.
  • Experience operating concrete saws, core drills, jack hammers and other air driven or power tools.
  • Experience in the operations associated with a tandem centreline mobile paint machine a definite asset.
  • Experience in the operation of small air-less mobile paint sprayers.
  • Must be comfortable performing work from ladders or an aerial lift at various heights.
  • Must be able to read and understand traffic drawings and be familiar with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada.
  • Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position (labour intensive) and conduct work in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to work independently or with a crew.


Security Clearance Requirements:

HOURS OF WORK: Monday – Friday, 7:00 am – 3:00 pm, 40 hours per week (other shifts and overtime may be required).

SALARY: $28.67 per hour as per CUPE Local 108 Collective Agreement.
