Job Summary

The 3rd Class Operating Engineer is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of plant utilities and production support systems. This role involves maintaining critical facility equipment, performing preventative maintenance, troubleshooting mechanical issues, and ensuring minimal downtime to support continuous production operations.

The successful candidate will have strong technical knowledge of industrial systems and will be required to interpret technical drawings, schematics, and specifications to perform repairs and maintenance effectively.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Valid TSSA 3rd Class Operating Engineer Certificate or Refrigeration B Operator Certificate (required)
  • Minimum 3–5 years of industrial maintenance experience
  • Strong knowledge of industrial mechanical systems and troubleshooting techniques
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, schematics, and technical specifications
  • Familiarity with safety standards, lockout/tagout procedures, and industrial compliance requirements

Key Responsibilities

Equipment Operation & Maintenance

  • Operate and maintain boilers, air compressors, ammonia refrigeration systems, cooling towers, and other plant utilities
  • Conduct boiler feedwater and cooling water testing
  • Perform preventative maintenance according to scheduled PM programs
  • Assist in continuous improvement of maintenance systems and reliability initiatives

Troubleshooting & Repairs

  • Diagnosing and repairing mechanical and equipment-related issues impacting production
  • Respond promptly to equipment failures to minimize downtime
  • Support production operations through timely maintenance interventions
  • Assist other trades as required

Documentation & Communication

  • Maintain accurate maintenance logs, work orders, and records
  • Communicate daily engineering activities with the Chief Engineer and supervisors
  • Ensure all maintenance documentation is completed in an organized and timely manner

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all company, provincial, and federal safety regulations, codes, and specifications
  • Strictly adhere to lockout/tagout procedures
  • Identify and address safety hazards immediately
  • Use required PPE including safety boots, glasses, and other protective equipment
  • Work safely on ladders, lifts, scaffolds, and in industrial environments

General Duties

  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, including tools and shop equipment
  • Order required parts and supplies as needed
  • Participating in training courses and professional development as required
  • Support maintenance management with additional projects and assignments
  • May be required to work overtime, weekends, alternate shifts, or on-call rotations

Working Conditions

  • Industrial plant environment with exposure to mechanical and operational hazards
  • Physical demands include standing, walking, bending, crouching, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Use of safety equipment is mandatory and provided
  • Shift work and overtime may be required based on operational needs

Compensation

At Chapman’s, compensation is guided by a pay-for-performance philosophy that recognizes and rewards individual contributions.

Initial starting rate of $43 per hour
