Apply your operational expertise to manage the essential facilities and systems that keep our municipal waste services running smoothly!

Waste Services plays an integral role in the day-to-day lives of Edmontonians by collecting, processing and disposing of solid waste for residential and non-residential customers. These functions are supported through education, volunteer and community programs; research and development; monitoring and compliance; business planning; and strong financial and utility management.

Working in an integrated business model, the General Supervisor is responsible for providing overall direction and making day-to-day decisions that ensure the best use of equipment, personnel, and contracted resources for processing solid waste within the Integrated Processing and Transfer Facility, maximizing diversion from landfill. Reporting directly to the General Supervisor are Management Supervisors and an Operations Coordinator, leading a total of approximately 90 staff, and the position also oversees approximately $40 million in contracted services. The success of this role ensures the successful meeting of waste processing and supply commitments held with external partners.

What will you do?

  • Coach mentor, and foster a collaborative and high-performing team culture
  • Identify opportunities for individual and collective skill-building to ensure the team is motivated and equipped to deliver results, keeping current with industry practice
  • Lead the development of continuous improvement strategies consistent with corporate direction, vision, and goals
  • Provide overall direction and make day-to-day decisions that best use the equipment, personnel, and contracted resources available for processing solid waste within the Integrated Processing and Transfer Facility and maximizing diversion from landfill
  • Oversee labour, equipment, and contracted resources to provide efficient truck transfer of waste between facilities at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre and to other destinations off-site in the Edmonton region
  • Manage waste processing and disposal agreements with waste-to-energy partners and landfill clients
  • Ensure that all City and OH&S safety standards and guidelines are implemented and enforced
  • Ensure the consistent application of policies, standard operating procedures and service delivery
  • Lead and/or participate in the development and application of tendering strategies and the oversight of contracts and relationships
Qualifications:
  • A Degree or Diploma in Business, Engineering, Environmental Science or a related discipline
  • Related leadership experience in a large, complex organization, including experience in waste management or an industrial setting
  • Demonstrated experience leading and managing change, building organizational talent, and empowering resources to achieve outcomes
  • Experience with purchasing and supply chains, budgeting processes, contract management, project and consultant management
  • Experience working with Unions, managing and resolving labour relations issues
  • Combinations of education and experience may be considered

Assets:

  • A Master’s Degree in a related field
  • Registration with The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) or a related designation(s)
  • Certification or coursework/training in financial management, public administration, change management, or other leadership training

Conditions of Employment and Work Environment:

  • 1 permanent, full-time position
  • Hours of Work: 36.9 hours per week, Monday - Friday. This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite.
  • Hire is dependent on a Criminal Information Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton. There may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Salary: $123,938.39 - $154,920.88 (Annually)
