Elections Alberta is now hiring Election Officers for the 2026 Provincial Referendum!

Positions are available for:

  • Advance Voting – October 13 - 17, 2026,
  • Election Day – October 19, 2026, and
  • Counting Ballots – October 19 - 21, 2026.

Applicants must be at least 16 years or 18 years on Election Day depending on the role, and eligible to work in Canada. Hiring will take place between July 15 and October 10, 2026. Only selected candidates will be contacted for an interview. Due to the volume of applications and the number of election officers to be hired, please be patient.

The following roles are available in each of Alberta's electoral divisions:

  • Site Supervisors – A Site Supervisor is assigned to a voting location on Election Day. The Site Supervisor is the senior official at the voting place and is responsible for supervising all election staff and activities occurring in the voting place.
  • Information Officers – An Information Officer is responsible for assisting electors in determining their voting area, if necessary. An Information Officer is appointed to all voting places with two or more voting stations. In a voting place with one voting station, the Site Supervisor performs this role.
  • Voting Officers – A Voting Officer is responsible for assisting electors with the voting process and answering electors’ questions. A Voting Officer is appointed for each voting station. The Voting Officer will work with a Record Clerk to administer voting and maintain the voting record for their assigned voting area(s).
  • Registration Officers – A Registration Officer is responsible for registering new electors using the Declaration of Elector process. A Registration Officer is required in voting places with three or more voting stations.
  • Record Clerks – A Record Clerk works as a team with a Voting Officer to administer voting and maintain the voting records for their assigned voting area(s).
  • Ballot Box Clerks – A Ballot Box Clerk is responsible for assisting electors in casting their ballots at each voting location.
  • Count Supervisors – A Count Supervisor is assigned to a counting location on Election Day starting at 2 pm, working until the end of the count. The Count Supervisor is the most senior official at the count and is responsible for supervising all election staff and activities occurring during the count.
  • Count Coordinators – A Count Coordinator is assigned to a counting location on Election Day starting at 5 pm, working until the end of the count. The Count Coordinator is responsible for assisting and overseeing Counting Teams during the count. They are also responsible for managing any scrutineers present.
  • Counting Officers – A Counting Officer is assigned to a voting location on Election Day starting at 5:00pm, working until the end of the count. Counting Officers are responsible for completing the unofficial count for the ballot box they are assigned. Counting Officers read, count, and organize ballots, and complete required paperwork.

Qualifications:

(Not all qualifications are required for each position.)

  • Be a resident in the electoral division where the voting place is located (preferred).
  • Be at least 16 years old or 18 years old on Election Day depending on the position.
  • Have map reading skills.
  • Have effective communication and public relations skills.
  • Have good written and communication skills.
  • Have legible handwriting.
  • Have experience in dealing with the public.
  • Have experience in conflict resolution.
  • Previous election experience is considered an asset for some positions.
