What You Will Do

Reporting to the Software Developer Lead, the Software Developer and Solutions Analyst splits their time between hands-on software development and solutions analysis for Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC). On the development side, they design, code, test, debug, and deploy new software and support existing systems. On the analysis side, they evaluate and configure vendor solutions, gather business requirements, build deep business knowledge of DUC's conservation and fundraising programs, scope projects, identify integration opportunities, coordinate testing, and deliver reporting — supporting users at DUC's head office and field locations across Canada.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Solutions Analysis (50%)

  • Support vendor evaluations and selection activities (RFP/RFI, demos, reference checks, cost analysis).
  • Configure and tailor SaaS/on premise platforms (e.g., Dynamics 365) to align with business processes.
  • Gather and document business requirements, user stories, workflows, and acceptance criteria.
  • Build strong understanding of DUC programs to inform solution recommendations.
  • Advise stakeholders on digital solutions and process improvements.
  • Scope projects through solution proposals, effort estimates, and delivery roadmaps.
  • Identify and design integrations across DUC systems to improve data quality and reduce duplication.
  • Plan and coordinate testing activities (UAT scripts, scenarios, defect triage, sign off).
  • Design and deliver reporting/analytics solutions (SSRS, Azure data services; Power BI an asset).

Software Development (30%)

  • Follow version control and DUC development standards.
  • Design, code, test, debug, and enhance applications and systems.
  • Contribute to database and API design decisions.
  • Manage release cycles and support user testing through release practices and test scripts.
  • Maintain documentation for new features and releases.
  • Stay current with software development trends and provide recommendations for future enhancements.

Team Mentorship & Collaboration (10%)

  • Participate in cross training and support other developers.
  • Collaborate across departments to design and deliver technology solutions.
  • Work with managers and feature owners to ensure requirements and business goals are met.
  • Engage regularly with IT leadership for guidance and alignment.

Security, Governance & Risk (10%)

  • Design and support solutions with strong security practices.
  • Ensure changes do not negatively impact connected systems; communicate risks promptly.
  • Support audits and compliance with regulatory guidelines (e.g., PIPEDA, PCI, Privacy Act, NIST).
  • Ensure solutions meet departmental requirements (finance, HR).
  • Evaluate and apply AI technologies responsibly, supporting safe and secure use across departments.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience as Software Developer or Solutions Analyst.
  • College diploma in Software Development or an undergraduate degree in Computer Science. A combination of experience and relevant education will be considered.
  • Experience managing environments, applying software packages, and coordinating software upgrades in the Microsoft Dynamics Lifecycle Services (LCS) portal.
  • Experience working on software development project teams.
  • Experience with requirements gathering, project planning, and effort estimates for the development of work breakdown structures with Project Managers.
  • Experience in rapidly learning new technologies and adapting them to the business requirements.
  • Broad experience of technical knowledge with respect to application development.
  • Experience with version/source control repositories and code management practices (e.g., GitHub).
  • Experience with low-code/no-code ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) platforms — for example, Boomi or similar is a plus but not required.
  • Experience with Joomla, WordPress, Shopify is a plus but not required.
  • Ability to write, analyze, and debug SQL queries (MS SQL, MySQL), and general management of SQL databases.
  • Familiar with software development lifecycles (e.g., Waterfall, Agile).
  • Familiar with agile work management software tools (e.g., Jira or similar).
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft DevOps, docker or other related services.
  • Understanding operation of the help desk and its procedures in supporting existing systems.

What We Offer

  • 3 weeks’ vacation with paid personal and sick days
  • Comprehensive compensation & benefits package
