Human Resources Manager

West Coast Kids is a modern baby and kids boutique with a proud history of over 50 years in business. Family-owned and Canadian-operated, we have grown to 10 locations across Canada, supported by our Bradford warehouse and head office operations in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and a team of approximately 325 employees.

We are looking for an experienced, dynamic and people-focused Human Resources Manager to join our team and take an active role in building and enhancing the Human Resources function at West Coast Kids.

This is a permanent, long-term opportunity for an individual who is reliable, highly organized, approachable and committed to supporting people. The successful candidate will bring strong communication skills, HR expertise, excellent writing abilities and experience developing and implementing HR policies and processes.

This is a hands-on role that requires someone who can manage the day-to-day needs of HR while also looking at the bigger picture—identifying opportunities to improve our systems, policies, training, employee experience and leadership capabilities as our company continues to grow.

The Human Resources Manager will work closely with senior leadership, field partners, store managers and our warehouse team to provide a high level of HR support across the organization.

Primary Objectives

  • Build, enhance and continually improve the Human Resources function at West Coast Kids.
  • Provide a responsive, approachable and knowledgeable HR resource for employees and management.
  • Support the health, safety and well-being of our workforce.
  • Develop strong and consistent HR practices across all locations.
  • Build a company culture focused on continuous improvement, employee engagement, retention, development and accountability.
  • Strengthen our HR systems, policies, processes and resources to support a growing organization.
  • Develop and support our managers so they have the knowledge, tools and confidence to effectively lead their teams.

Key Responsibilities Human Resources & Employee Relations

  • Manage the day-to-day Human Resources function and provide guidance and support to employees and management.
  • Be a highly responsive and accessible HR resource for employees across the organization, ensuring questions and concerns are acknowledged and addressed in a timely, professional and caring manner.
  • Build trust with employees by being approachable, available and willing to listen while maintaining confidentiality and professional boundaries.
  • Provide a high level of HR support to our stores, warehouse and leadership teams.
  • Support employee relations, workplace concerns, performance management, attendance and other employee matters.
  • Coach managers through employee situations and provide practical guidance to help them address issues appropriately and consistently.
  • Support employee reviews, development plans and ongoing performance discussions.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential employee records and documentation.

Building & Enhancing Human Resources

  • Take an active leadership role in building, strengthening and continually improving HR at West Coast Kids.
  • Develop HR processes, systems and resources that support a growing organization of approximately 325 employees.
  • Establish clear, consistent and professional HR practices that can be effectively implemented across all locations.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the employee experience from recruitment and onboarding through training, development, performance management and retention.
  • Stay current with HR best practices, employment legislation and workplace trends.
  • Regularly review our HR practices and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, communication, consistency and employee support.
  • Develop a long-term HR strategy that supports the continued growth of West Coast Kids and our people.

HR Policies, Procedures & Employee Handbook

  • Take ownership of the development, review and ongoing improvement of West Coast Kids' HR policies and procedures.
  • Write, develop, implement and update HR policies that are clear, practical and easy for employees and managers to understand.
  • Identify gaps in our current policies and proactively recommend new policies or improvements.
  • Regularly review existing policies to ensure they remain relevant, effective and aligned with current employment practices and applicable legislation.
  • Lead the ongoing review and enhancement of the West Coast Kids Employee Handbook, ensuring it accurately reflects our current policies, procedures, workplace expectations, benefits and company practices.
  • Communicate policy changes effectively to managers and employees and provide training when required.
  • Ensure managers have access to the information and tools they need to confidently and consistently apply company policies.
  • Help create greater consistency across all West Coast Kids locations through clear policies, procedures and communication.

Manager Training & Development

  • Develop and deliver practical HR training for managers and leaders across the organization.
  • Teach managers new skills, processes and best practices that they can apply directly with their teams.
  • Create tools, resources and training materials that make HR processes easier to understand and implement.
  • Coach managers in employee communication, performance management, documentation, attendance, conflict resolution, employee development and workplace expectations.
  • Help managers become stronger leaders by teaching and coaching rather than simply managing issues after they arise.
  • Identify common challenges or knowledge gaps among managers and develop training to address them.
  • Support leadership development and succession planning throughout the organization.

Store & Field Support

  • Partner closely with field leadership and store managers to provide a high level of HR support.
  • Maintain regular communication with our stores and proactively identify where additional HR guidance, training or resources may be required.
  • Understand the realities of a fast-paced, service-oriented retail environment and provide practical HR solutions that support both employees and business needs.
  • Ensure stores have the resources and knowledge required to effectively manage their teams.
  • Promote consistency across all locations while recognizing that each store and team may have different operational needs.
  • Be a trusted partner to our managers and leadership team.

Payroll, Benefits & Employee Resources

  • Oversee payroll processes and ensure accurate and timely payroll administration.
  • Support employee benefits administration and related inquiries.
  • Develop a strong understanding of our benefits program and become the go-to benefits expert for employees and managers.
  • Educate employees and managers on benefits eligibility, coverage, enrollment, changes and available resources.
  • Ensure employees receive clear and accurate information regarding their benefits.
  • Work closely with benefits providers and internal partners to resolve employee questions or concerns.
  • Identify opportunities to improve how benefits information is communicated and understood by employees.

Recruitment & Staffing

  • Manage recruitment activities, including job postings, candidate screening, interviews, selection and onboarding.
  • Partner with management to identify short- and long-term staffing requirements based on workload and business needs.
  • Support workforce planning and succession development.
  • Develop and improve onboarding processes to ensure new employees receive a positive and consistent introduction to West Coast Kids.
  • Support employee retention by identifying opportunities to improve the employee experience.

Health & Safety

  • Lead and support the implementation and ongoing monitoring of the company's Occupational Health and Safety programs.
  • Manage and coordinate WCB/Workers' Compensation cases.
  • Ensure required safety documentation, training and processes are maintained.
  • Work with managers to promote a strong culture of workplace safety.
  • Identify opportunities to improve workplace health and safety practices and employee awareness.

Training & Employee Development

  • Develop and maintain employee training programs and materials.
  • Enhance and maintain company training manuals and resources.
  • Identify opportunities for employee skill development and leadership growth.
  • Support managers in creating effective onboarding and training plans.
  • Develop programs and initiatives that support employee engagement, recognition, retention and career growth.

HR Systems & Process Improvement

  • Develop and maintain an organized HR database and employee information system.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential employee records.
  • Identify opportunities to improve HR processes, systems and efficiencies.
  • Develop reporting and tracking systems that help leadership understand HR trends and workforce needs.
  • Experience with Dayforce is considered a strong asset.
  • Help ensure our HR technology and processes are being used effectively and consistently.

Qualifications & Experience

The successful candidate will be an experienced HR professional who enjoys working with people while also being comfortable managing the details, systems and administrative requirements of a growing organization.

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Post-secondary education in Human Resources, Business Administration or a related field; HR designation or working toward a designation is an asset.
  • Previous experience in a Human Resources role, ideally within a multi-location or fast-paced organization.
  • Strong experience in writing, developing, implementing and updating HR policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing and maintaining an Employee Handbook or similar HR resource.
  • Strong understanding of employee relations, performance management, recruitment, onboarding and employee development.
  • Experience with workplace health and safety programs and WCB/Workers' Compensation case management.
  • Experience with payroll administration and employee benefits.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong training and presentation skills, with the ability to teach managers and employees new processes and skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Experience developing and delivering training for managers and employees is an asset.
  • Experience with Dayforce is considered a strong asset.
  • Strong computer skills and the ability to develop and maintain organized HR systems and databases.
  • A proactive, solutions-focused approach with the ability to identify opportunities and implement improvements.
  • A professional, approachable and people-focused leadership style.

What Success Looks Like

Success in this role means becoming a trusted HR partner for our employees, managers and leadership team.

Our employees should feel comfortable reaching out to HR and know that they will receive a timely, respectful and knowledgeable response. Our managers should feel supported and confident that they have someone they can turn to for guidance, education and practical solutions.

The successful candidate will be proactive rather than reactive—looking for ways to improve our HR practices, strengthen our managers, develop our policies and create better systems before challenges become larger issues.

They will help our managers become better leaders by teaching, coaching and giving them the tools and confidence to manage their teams effectively.

They will become a knowledgeable resource for employees on benefits, workplace policies, health and safety, development opportunities and other HR-related questions.

Most importantly, this person will help us build an HR department that is responsive, organized, knowledgeable, consistent and genuinely supportive of our people.

The Opportunity

This is an opportunity for an HR professional who wants to build something meaningful.

West Coast Kids has been part of Canadian families' lives for more than 50 years, and as we continue to grow, we want to strengthen the people, systems and culture that support our success.

We are looking for someone who will not simply maintain existing HR processes, but will bring ideas, structure, expertise and energy to help develop the next stage of Human Resources at West Coast Kids.

If you are someone who enjoys working with people, developing leaders, creating better systems, writing and improving policies, and making a meaningful difference within an organization, we would love to hear from you.
