Looking for a new and exciting job opportunity? We are looking for an Assistant Designer, Signals to join our team!
What You Will Do
Reporting to the Senior Design Engineer - Signals, you will be responsible for providing engineering support in the preparation, analysis, monitoring and co-ordination of new projects or modifications to existing equipment as related to the design and testing of TTC's systems and equipment for the department.
As an Assistant Designer, Signals, you will assist with the preparation of designs of vital and non-vital circuits in accordance with signal design standards for new and modified signal design systems. You will also assist with estimates, material lists, specifications, standards, policies, work methods, test procedures and drawings. You will assist with the tender and proposal evaluation and review external submissions related to subway signaling designs. Additionally, you will provide cost comparisons, feasibility studies and budget estimates.
You will also conduct engineering analyses, evaluations, and tests. You will assist with the testing and commissioning of new systems and conduct investigations into operational, communications or subway signaling problems.
You will liaise with staff of various TTC departments to ensure coherence and consistency of information on drawings for relevant project components and that designs meet TTC's operating requirements.
As an Assistant Designer, Signals, you will be required to provide engineering support and guidance to operational maintenance personnel, supervisory staff, students or on-site contract employees regarding existing equipment, new installations or inspection work on a 24-hour basis.

What Qualifications Do You Bring?
- Your educational background will consist of a post-secondary college diploma or university degree in a related discipline (i.e. Electrical or Computer Engineering Degree) or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
- Registration with, or working towards PEO status with the Professional Engineers of Ontario will be considered an asset.
- Your certification with the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) will be considered an asset.
- Your application will demonstrate experience with testing and commissioning, and operation of signaling systems which will also be considered an asset.
- Your sound knowledge of electrical engineering principles, methods, practices and measurements will be evident on your application.
- In addition, your application will demonstrate working knowledge of subway signaling design principles, signaling equipment, the associated electronic testing equipment, vital and non-vital systems and other associated subway signaling equipment utilized, maintained and rehabilitated by the section.
- Your application will reveal strong knowledge of computers and software applications related to the work such as Bentley MicroStation CADD, MS Office (Word, Excel & Access etc.).
- Your application will also reveal technical experience with computer networking and system administration, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Windows Server operating environments; virtualization; programming and scripting in Bash, Python, C, and JavaScript.
- You will have sound judgement and well-developed technical, analytical, problem solving, interpersonal, verbal communication and engineering report writing skills.
- Your knowledge of the Ontario Electric Safety Code, AREMA Communications & Signals Manual of Recommended Practices, CENELEC, TTC standards, CSA standards and other applicable codes and standards will also be evident in your application.
- As an Assistant Designer, Signals, you will be required to obtain Subway Rulebook Certification.
