Position Overview: Gobind Sarvar School in Calgary is seeking a passionate and skilled Kirtan Teacher to join our team. As a faith-based institution rooted in Sikh values, we are committed to providing a nurturing environment where students can grow spiritually, academically, and socially.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach Kirtan (Sikh devotional music) to students, fostering an understanding and appreciation of Sikh musical traditions.
  • Plan and deliver engaging Kirtan lessons that cater to the developmental needs and abilities of young learners.
  • Integrate cultural and spiritual elements of Kirtan into the curriculum, aligning with the school’s mission to connect students with their cultural roots.
  • Create a supportive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages students to explore and express their spirituality through music.
  • Collaborate with other educators and school staff to enhance the overall educational experience and community atmosphere.
  • Assess student progress and provide constructive feedback to support their musical and spiritual development.
  • Participate in professional development activities to continually enhance teaching skills and stay current with educational trends.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Education degree from India or equivalent qualification recognized by Alberta Education.
  • Proficiency in Kirtan and familiarity with Sikh musical traditions and hymns (Shabads).
  • Previous experience teaching Kirtan or related music education to young children is preferred.
  • Understanding of child development principles and the ability to adapt teaching strategies to meet diverse learning needs.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively engage with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Commitment to the school’s values, including the wearing of a bandana on school property and adherence to vegetarian dietary practices during school hours.

Additional Requirements:

  • Eligibility to work in Canada.
  • Willingness to adhere to the school’s dress code (covering heads with a bandana) and dietary practices (vegetarian snacks and lunches).
