Full job description

Area Rug Shop is looking for a motivated, sales-driven Store Manager who combines a passion for home décor with strong leadership skills and a hands-on approach to retail management.

The ideal candidate has practical experience in home décor or furniture retail, such as furniture sales, home furnishings, or a similar design-focused retail environment. Candidates with formal interior design education and a strong understanding of retail sales are also encouraged to apply.

We are looking for someone who understands that successful retail is about more than managing a store. It’s about creating an exceptional customer experience, developing a high-performing sales team, driving results, and taking ownership of the day-to-day operations of the business.

As a Store Manager, you will lead by example on the sales floor, help customers find the right products for their spaces, coach your team to achieve sales goals, and adapt to the changing needs of a growing retail business.

Key Responsibilities

Sales & Customer Experience

  • Drive store sales by delivering exceptional customer service and leading by example on the sales floor.
  • Proactively engage customers to understand their needs, design preferences, budgets, and space requirements.
  • Help customers select products that complement their homes, providing guidance on rug sizing, colours, patterns, materials, and styling.
  • Identify opportunities to increase sales through product recommendations, add-on sales, and effective selling techniques.
  • Monitor sales performance, work toward established targets, and implement strategies to improve results.
  • Build customer relationships that encourage repeat business and referrals.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, motivate, and develop a team of retail sales associates.
  • Provide ongoing coaching, training, and feedback to improve sales performance and customer engagement.
  • Establish clear expectations and hold team members accountable for achieving individual and store goals.
  • Foster a positive, collaborative, and results-oriented work environment.
  • Lead by example by demonstrating strong sales behaviours, professionalism, and adaptability.

Store Operations & Merchandising

  • Oversee daily store operations, ensuring the store is organized, presentable, and operating efficiently.
  • Maintain strong visual merchandising standards and ensure products are displayed in an appealing, customer-focused manner.
  • Support inventory management, product receiving, transfers, and stock organization.
  • Ensure company policies, procedures, and operational standards are consistently followed.
  • Identify operational challenges and take initiative to develop practical solutions.
  • Communicate effectively with district management and contribute to broader business objectives.

What We're Looking For

  • Previous experience in a retail management, supervisory, or senior sales role, preferably within home décor, furniture, home furnishings, or another design-focused retail environment.
  • Hands-on experience selling furniture or home décor is strongly preferred. Experience in environments such as Structube, furniture retailers, or home furnishings stores would be particularly relevant.
  • Alternatively, formal education in interior design or a related field, combined with strong sales ability and a customer-focused mindset.
  • A proven ability to drive sales, work toward targets, and recognize opportunities to grow revenue.
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to coach, motivate, and hold a team accountable.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to engage customers and guide purchasing decisions.
  • A practical understanding of interior styling, colour coordination, room proportions, and product selection.
  • A hands-on, adaptable approach, with the ability to balance selling, team leadership, and daily store operations.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • A self-motivated attitude and willingness to take ownership of store performance.

The Ideal Candidate

You are a natural salesperson who enjoys helping customers bring their spaces to life. You understand how to turn a customer's needs into a sale without making the experience feel pressured.

You are equally comfortable coaching an employee, helping a customer choose the right rug, reviewing sales performance, or rolling up your sleeves to resolve an operational challenge.

You thrive in a hands-on retail environment where initiative, accountability, flexibility, and results matter. You are commercially minded, adaptable to changing priorities, and motivated by the opportunity to make a measurable impact on store performance.

Why Join Area Rug Shop?

  • The opportunity to take ownership of store performance and contribute directly to business success.
  • A customer-focused retail environment centred on home décor and design.
  • The opportunity to develop a sales team and build lasting customer relationships.
  • A hands-on leadership role where your ideas, initiative, and results make a difference.

If you have a passion for home décor, a strong sales mindset, and the leadership skills to bring out the best in a team, we would love to hear from you.
