Full job description

About Valcom Antennas:

Valcom Antennas is a Canadian-owned designer and manufacturer of mission-critical antenna systems serving defence, government, public safety, and commercial customers around the world. For over 70 years, we have designed and manufactured HF, VHF, UHF, and multiple-band antenna solutions that perform in demanding environments where reliable communications matter.

Position Summary:

We are seeking a practical, hands-on RF Engineer to join our Engineering team and work closely with our Chief Engineer in the development, testing, and improvement of antenna systems.

This is not a research position.

We are looking for an engineer who enjoys solving real-world problems, designing products, building and testing prototypes, troubleshooting issues, and working closely with manufacturing to bring designs into production.

The successful candidate will have experience in RF engineering and antenna design, particularly in the HF, VHF, and UHF frequency ranges. They will be comfortable moving between computer modeling, prototype fabrication, laboratory testing, production support, and field troubleshooting as required.

This role is ideal for someone who takes ownership of their work, enjoys learning, and wants to contribute directly to products used in critical communications applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop HF, VHF, and UHF antenna systems and related RF components
  • Perform antenna modeling, simulation, analysis, and optimization
  • Conduct RF testing, measurement, validation, and troubleshooting
  • Support prototype development and product qualification activities
  • Work closely with manufacturing to ensure designs are practical, producible, and cost-effective
  • Investigate and resolve product performance issues
  • Support product improvements and new product development initiatives
  • Prepare engineering documentation, drawings, specifications, test procedures, and reports
  • Participate in customer technical discussions when required
  • Support defence, government, and commercial communications projects

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, RF Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or related discipline
  • 7 Years of Experience in RF engineering
  • Experience with antenna design considered an asset
  • Experience working with HF, VHF, and UHF frequencies
  • Strong understanding of antenna theory, impedance matching, propagation, and RF measurement techniques
  • Experience using RF simulation and modeling tools, such as FEKO
  • Hands-on experience with RF test equipment such as:

Network Analyzers

Spectrum Analyzers

Signal Generators

RF Power Meters

  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve technical problems independently
  • Strong communication and documentation skill

Preferred:

  • Experience designing communications antennas for defence, military, public safety, or government applications
  • Experience with broadband and tactical communication systems
  • Familiarity with environmental and qualification testing
  • Experience supporting products through manufacturing and production
  • Knowledge of Canadian or NATO defence communications systems
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

What We're Looking For:

We're looking for someone who:

  • Enjoys building and improving real products
  • Is willing to roll up their sleeves and get involved in building, testing and troubleshooting
  • Takes ownership and accountability for their work
  • Has a strong work ethic and attention to detail
  • Approaches challenges with a positive, can-do attitude
  • Works collaboratively and respectfully with engineers, technicians, and production staff
  • Takes pride in delivering high-quality solutions

What Success Looks Like:

In this role, success means becoming a trusted technical resource who helps develop practical, reliable antenna solutions, supports manufacturing, solves problems quickly, and contributes to the continued growth of Valcom's defence and communications business.

If you are looking for a role where you can see the direct impact of your engineering work on products used in real-world applications, we would like to hear from you.
