Full job description

Would you love to grow your career in a small company where the software you write is used by the utilities keeping the power on and the world moving forward? If so, we want to hear from you.

TallSky Consulting Group is recruiting for a Senior Full Stack Developer on behalf of Delta-X Research - a nimble and growing Victoria, BC-based company serving the electric power industry. We are looking for a remote team member located on southern Vancouver Island or in the Lower Mainland.

Why Join Delta-X Research?

Delta-X Research is a Canadian-owned company that builds science-based decision-support tools for the electric power industry. As a Senior Full Stack Developer, you will make critical contributions to the product across the entire software and infrastructure stack, working with modern technologies alongside a small team of talented, low-ego, kind people. You will collaborate with other developers and with business stakeholders to build the right thing, and you will have opportunities to mentor and to be mentored.

Delta-X Research offers a competitive salary of $104,000 - $125,800 per year to start (based on related education and experience) plus profit sharing. Additional benefits include medical, dental, life insurance and long-term disability, 3 weeks of vacation with room to grow, and a remote work environment built on trust and flexibility with plenty of opportunities to learn and expand into new areas as the company scales.

The development team works in what Delta-X Research describes as a craftspeople-not-labourers, best-idea-wins, sustainable culture. It is a team that values thoughtful communication, shared wins, and work-life balance, where technical decisions are made on their merits and nobody is asked to sprint indefinitely. This is a small team where people talk to each other daily, and the work goes better when you enjoy that.

A word about working together in person. While this role is primarily remote, the software development team meets in person in Victoria at least quarterly for planning, architecture, and team building.

The Senior Full Stack Developer’s Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Software Development and Technical Ownership: Own the development, deployment, and maintenance of complex software solutions and supporting infrastructure for the data acquisition and diagnostic challenges of high-voltage equipment. Take on work that is not fully defined at the outset, shape the approach with stakeholders, make and record the technical decisions, and resolve the complex defects others have been unable to isolate.
  • Code Quality, Security and Development Practices: Help set and maintain coding standards, security guidelines, technical documentation, and automated testing strategies. Conduct code reviews that support quality and maintainability, and help keep the team current with a fast-moving cybersecurity landscape.
  • Technical Guidance and Mentorship: Serve as a source of technical guidance and a point of escalation for complex problems. Mentor less experienced developers through pairing, code review, and day-to-day support, and lead development projects without holding supervisory responsibility.
  • Collaboration and Project Planning: Work with Product Development, Product Management, Research, and Customer Operations to translate business requirements into technical solutions. Estimate work where the problem definition is still incomplete, support customers on escalated technical issues, and look for ways to improve development workflows and tooling.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or software engineering. Additional education or background in a related engineering or science discipline, such as engineering, mathematics, or physics, is an asset. An equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience will be considered.
  • Seven or more years of professional software development experience building single-page application SaaS products, with substantial depth in both Python back-end and React with TypeScript front-end work.
  • Proven success in a small company, working remotely and across team boundaries.
  • Experience leading development projects and coordinating the work of other developers.
  • A demonstrated history of producing clean, well-architected, and maintainable code and API endpoints, along with proven experience with SQL, relational databases, and ORM layers.
  • Proven experience with DevOps responsibilities including Linux and the command line, infrastructure as code, package management, CI/CD pipelines, containerization, and monitoring and alerting, together with defensive coding and defence in depth.
  • Experience with strongly typed or object-oriented languages, time-series data, the Python scientific computing stack such as NumPy and pandas, and the utility industry is an asset.
  • Familiarity with elements of the current stack is also an asset: React Query, Vite, Playwright, i18next, ECharts, Matplotlib, Plotly on the front end; SQLAlchemy, Postgres, TimescaleDB on the back end; Ansible, Podman, HAProxy, and Terraform/OpenTofu, Yarn, uv for infrastructure and package management; and GitLab and Claude Code for development tooling.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Design and build complex software with limited direction, including work that spans more than one system or component.
  • Diagnose and resolve difficult technical problems, independently or with the team.
  • Explain technical trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical colleagues, in writing and in conversation.
  • Provide constructive code review and technical mentorship to less experienced developers.
  • Able to collaborate and make sound decisions when requirements are incomplete, and to judge what to decide independently and what to escalate.
  • Communicate openly and often in a remote team, asking questions early rather than working around a problem quietly.

How to Apply:

IMPORTANT: To be considered for this role, please include your resume and a paragraph (less than 200 words in Word or PDF format) that sells us on why you are our ideal candidate. Please send both to TallSky Consulting. This is a remote opportunity for candidates based on southern Vancouver Island or in the Lower Mainland.

We thank all candidates who apply; however, after initial acknowledgement of application, only those selected for further consideration will be contacted.

Pay: $104,000.00-$125,800.00 per year

Benefits:

  • Company events
  • Dental care
  • Disability insurance
  • Extended health care
  • Flexible schedule
  • Life insurance
  • Paid time off
  • Profit sharing

Application question(s):

  • This is a remote opportunity for candidates based on southern Vancouver Island or in the Lower Mainland. Do you meet that requirement?
  • Only candidates with 7+ years of professional software development experience building single-page application SaaS products, with substantial depth in both Python back-end and React with TypeScript front-end work will be considered for this role. Do you meet that requirement?
