Full job description
Position Summary
Vertical Motion builds and supports custom software for clients and develops AI-enabled products and engineering tools. This senior role focuses on AI engineering, application and agent security, cloud and container infrastructure, and harness development: the software that gives AI agents context, tools, execution environments and reliable feedback. The position owns architecture, implementation, testing, deployment and ongoing operation, while contributing to the maintenance and modernization of client production systems.
The position carries two ongoing mandates:
- AI engineering and platform ownership. Lead the development of secure AI-enabled software, agent harnesses and supporting infrastructure, with accountability for reliability, maintainability and measurable results.
- Client delivery and technical continuity. Deliver complete features within client development teams and maintain established production systems, preserving business rules, integrations and security boundaries as those systems evolve.
The role works directly with company leadership, client stakeholders, client in-house developers and QA.
Core Competencies and Supporting Capabilities
Business Need and Technical Continuity
Vertical Motion needs senior technical ownership across AI-enabled products, internal engineering tools and established client applications. This role develops new capabilities while keeping existing systems secure, dependable and maintainable.
The central requirement is the ability to connect AI engineering, security, infrastructure and harness development within working production software. Candidates must be able to assess technical tradeoffs, investigate failures and carry changes through implementation, testing, deployment and support.
Responsibilities overlap across several areas:
- AI features depend on reliable context, service integrations, validated outputs and measurable evaluation.
- Agent execution requires secure identity, controlled tool access, isolated environments and operational monitoring.
- Automation requires repeatable testing and independent verification before generated outputs are adopted.
- Shared information requires trustworthy synchronization, version history, conflict handling and recovery.
- Client delivery requires coordinated changes across data, APIs, interfaces, permissions, background processing, integrations and release workflows.
Broad technical ownership maintains architectural, security and operational continuity. Specialist experience with individual frameworks, client domains and device technologies supports that ownership and is treated as an asset rather than a separate core competency.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
General Responsibilities
- Research, evaluate and select technologies and architectural approaches for new and existing systems.
- Translate business and user requirements into technical specifications.
- Design system, data, integration and security architectures for web, mobile, desktop and cloud applications.
- Develop, test and document software, and coordinate implementation, integration and deployment with company staff, clients and client developers.
- Assess, troubleshoot, upgrade and maintain production applications, and resolve production incidents.
- When necessary, guide and mentor other developers through training material, reference implementations and coding standards.
1. AI Engineering and Harness Development
- Architect, develop and maintain production AI-enabled applications and agent harnesses, including the services, interfaces and execution controls needed to support dependable automation.
- Design model-agnostic integrations so AI providers and underlying models can evolve without substantial application redesign.
- Build context management and grounding capabilities that give agents relevant, authorized information while preserving source attribution and data boundaries.
- Develop secure agent-to-tool and agent-to-service integrations using Model Context Protocol (MCP) or equivalent interfaces, preserving the requesting user's permissions.
- Build orchestration and runtime controls for agent tasks, including environment provisioning, tool execution, task state, cancellation and failure recovery.
- Apply identity, access and execution policies throughout agent workflows, including appropriate human approval before sensitive operations.
- Maintain controlled AI toolchains through version management, integrity verification, reproducible environments and documented update policies.
- Develop AI-assisted test generation and validation. Adopt generated regression tests only after repeated independent execution demonstrates reliability.
- Integrate automated application security testing with explicit authorization and environment safeguards. Require approval for active scans, restrict them to authorized non-production environments, protect sensitive diagnostic data and track findings through resolution. Automated testing complements external manual penetration testing.
- Develop dependable data and file synchronization with change detection, version history, concurrency control, conflict handling, recovery and user or agent attribution.
- Build diagnostic and feedback tooling that captures sufficient application context to investigate defects while redacting sensitive information.
2. Software Intelligence and Supply Chain Security
- Develop maintainable software analysis services and interfaces using suitable backend frameworks, relational or graph data models and modern web technologies.
- Build source parsing, indexing, search and dependency analysis capabilities across multiple languages and software ecosystems.
- Integrate dependency inventory and vulnerability management tools, using package manifests and lock files to identify installed versions and maintain consistent findings.
- Generate and process Software Bills of Materials (SBOMs) using established standards, and integrate dependency analysis into repository and CI/CD workflows.
- Develop grounded AI-assisted code review, reporting and software analysis workflows through repository APIs, webhooks and other controlled integrations.
- Apply schema validation, prompt-injection defenses, protection against unintended network or resource access, and rate limiting to AI integrations.
- Design measured experiments to evaluate AI and code-analysis approaches, document results and determine their suitability for production use.
3. Client System Development and Support
Work alongside Vertical Motion developers, client stakeholders and client development teams. Own complete features from requirements through data design, APIs, interfaces, permissions, background processing, deployment and post-release support. Apply the following capabilities across assigned systems:
- Develop reliable business applications that manage operational records, reporting and external service integrations.
- Implement secure multi-tenant workflows, document processing, approval processes and concurrency controls.
- Translate review, assessment and certification requirements into maintainable workflows with appropriate notifications and auditability.
- Support subscription-based applications, identity integration, payment processing, localized interfaces and associated mobile functionality.
- Integrate work tracking, accounting and other business services, including dependable synchronization and reconciliation.
- Maintain administrative interfaces and transaction workflows while incrementally modernizing legacy applications.
Across these systems:
- Translate client business rules into reliable software and keep them intact as systems evolve.
- Maintain continuity of knowledge of each system so changes can be made safely without disrupting users.
- Work with client stakeholders and client in-house developers on requirements, estimates and releases.
- Support desktop applications and external device integrations where required, using vendor interfaces and appropriate diagnostic techniques.
4. Application, Agent and Identity Security
- Implement standards-based authentication for users, agents and services, including OAuth 2.0, token lifecycle management and enterprise identity integration.
- Design and verify role-based and resource-level authorization, least-privilege access, tenant isolation and permission-preserving delegation.
- Apply secure credential storage and rotation, replay protection, account privacy, safe logging, input and output handling, secret management and vulnerability remediation. Maintain traceability for user, service and AI-agent actions.
5. Infrastructure, Release Engineering and Operations
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines with environment separation, automated checks and controlled promotion through development, testing, staging and production.
- Deploy and operate cloud services, managed databases, storage and Linux or Windows hosts using infrastructure as code, secure network configuration, monitoring and operational diagnostics.
- Build hardened container images and reproducible releases with version pinning, integrity verification and controlled artifact promotion. Automate container lifecycle management with appropriate network isolation, resource limits and storage controls.
- Maintain software packaging, installation and controlled update processes, including desktop distribution where required.
- Operate background services and distributed job processing with concurrency control, locking, retries, idempotency and recovery from partial failures.
6. Quality Engineering
- Write and maintain unit, integration, API and browser regression tests, including tests against representative databases and isolated environments. Evaluate AI workflows for correctness, repeatability and failure handling.
- Maintain quality gates through static analysis, linting, code review and architecture checks. Use telemetry and reproducible diagnostics to investigate defects and production incidents.
7. Team Enablement
- Develop practical training material covering software engineering, AI integrations, secure development and automated testing.
- Build reference implementations, technical documentation, integration guides and technical debt assessments.
- Guide the adoption of AI-assisted development practices, including effective use of agent tools, review of generated work and safe operating boundaries.
- Build proof-of-concept software for discovery and technical validation, and communicate findings to company leadership and client stakeholders.
