Full job description

Company Overview

Sirius Instrumentation and Controls Inc. designs and manufactures innovative chemical injection systems, smart controls, and remote power solutions for the oil and gas industry. Our technologies help eliminate greenhouse gas emissions, improve injection accuracy, and reduce manpower and chemical costs – two of our customers' largest expenses. Founded in 2003 and headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta, Sirius is a registered APEGA corporation supported by a highly skilled technical team.

Position Summary

The Automation Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and implementation of PLC and SCADA-based control systems for Sirius's chemical injection and remote power products. This role leads automation projects from concept through commissioning, mentors junior engineers, and works closely with Product Development, Manufacturing, and Field Service to deliver reliable, safe, and field-ready control solutions for oil and gas customers.

Key Responsibilities

● Design, program, and test PLC-based control systems for chemical injection skids, tank systems, and remote power units

● Develop and maintain SCADA/HMI applications for real-time monitoring, alarming, and remote control of field equipment

● Lead automation design reviews and provide technical direction to junior and intermediate technical department team members

● Select and integrate instrumentation, sensors, and communication hardware (RTUs, radios, cellular/satellite telemetry) suited to remote, unmanned well-site environments

● Collaborate with Mechanical and Electrical Engineering to ensure control system designs meet CSA/APEGA standards and hazardous location (Class I Division 2) requirements

● Develop control narratives, I/O lists, wiring diagrams, and functional specifications

● Support factory acceptance testing (FAT), commissioning, and start-up at customer sites, including field travel as required

● Troubleshoot control system issues in the field and provide technical escalation support to the Service team

● Identify and drive continuous improvement opportunities in automation design standards, code libraries, and testing procedures

● Champion safety in all engineering and field activities, consistent with Sirius's zero-incident safety culture

Qualifications

● Bachelor's degree or diploma in Electrical, Instrumentation, or Controls Engineering (or equivalent technical discipline)

● Registered, or eligible for registration, as a P.Eng. or C.E.T. with APEGA

● Minimum 5–7 years of experience in industrial automation, with direct PLC/SCADA programming experience

● Proven experience in the oil and gas or process industries; chemical injection or wellsite automation experience considered a strong asset

● Proficiency with major PLC platforms (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar) and SCADA/HMI software

● Working knowledge of industrial communication protocols (Modbus, Ethernet/IP, DNP3)

● Familiarity with hazardous location classifications and relevant CSA/electrical code requirements

● Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to support field commissioning and service escalations

● Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear technical documentation

● Valid driver's licence and willingness to travel to customer sites, including remote field locations

Working Conditions

● Primary work performed at the Edmonton facility, with periodic travel to customer well sites across Western Canada and the United States

● Field visits may involve exposure to outdoor and remote-site conditions; appropriate PPE and safety training provided

● Occasional after-hours support may be required for time-sensitive commissioning or field escalations

Why Sirius

Sirius offers the opportunity to work on technologies that help the oil and gas industry reduce its environmental footprint while improving operational performance. Our team is guided by a culture of Continuous Innovation, Integrity, and Collaboration – and a shared commitment to Under Promise and Over Deliver.

Benefits:

  • Company events
  • On-site parking
  • Paid time off
  • RRSP match
