Position Type:

• Part Time.
• Up to 12 hours/week.
• Shift hours will be weekdays before and after school - 8:25am to 9:25am and 2:30pm to 3:45pm, [with occasional extended shifts from 2:30 – 4:30]
• Availability for all shifts is not required to apply; however, preference will be given to applicants available for all or most weekly shifts.
• 2 positions at Hastings Elementary (2625 Franklin St, Vancouver)
• 2 positions at Selkirk Elementary (1750 E 22nd Ave E, Vancouver)

Start & End Date:

• Training hours late August (approximately 10 hours total).
• Regular shifts Sept 8, 2026 – June 30, 2027

Location:

• Regular shifts at either Hastings Elementary or Selkirk Elementary
• Training to take place virtually or at SCY’s office near Broadway and Granville in Vancouver.

Compensation: $27.85/ hour and vacation paid out at 6% plus sick days

Organization and Program:

The City of Vancouver’s School Streets Program aims to improve safety for students arriving and leaving school, encourage the use of active transportation and transit, and foster community connections. The program aligns with the City’s Climate Emergency Action Plan goal of having two-thirds of daily trips made using active transportation and transit by 2030.

On school days, during drop-off and pick-up times, one street adjacent to participating schools is transformed into a car-free zone for 30 to 75 minutes, allowing safe walking, biking, and rolling. School Street Leaders set up road barriers in the morning and afternoon, preventing motor vehicles from entering or exiting the School Street. School Street Leaders also activate the street by providing games and activities for the students to play with.

The Society for Children and Youth (SCY) of BC is a unique, provincial not-for-profit organization. Our mission is to improve the well-being of children and youth in BC through the advancement of their civic, political, economic, social, cultural, and legal rights. Since 1974, the Society has focused on providing a strong voice representing children and youth.

The Society’s work focuses on four key priorities: child and youth rights, child and youth friendly communities, social justice, and organizational resilience. We have four core organizational values that School Streets is built around: relationships, centering children and youth, being compassionate, and being resourceful.

Responsibilities:

School Street Leaders will support the delivery of the program at an assigned school. Leaders support the safety of students and families during designated School Streets hours.

Specific duties include:

• Deploy and retrieve street barricades at designated times, closing the street to vehicular traffic during school arrival and dismissal times
• Ensure clean and safe environment on the street
• Redirect vehicles attempting to enter and exit the School Street during closure times
• Set up school play equipment along School Street
• Communicate effectively with students, parents, school staff, and community members regarding School Streets
• Address conflicts or issues that may arise in a calm and professional manner
• Maintain consistent attendance and punctuality
• Complete a daily log
• Complete incident reports as required
• Follow established procedures and guidelines of School Streets as outlined in the training materials
• Other duties as required

• Experience working with school-aged children, and a demonstrated ability to engage and interact with children
• Reliable, punctual, and committed to the program schedule
• Ability to follow guidelines and prioritize safety
• Respect for people of all ages, races, cultures, abilities and sexual orientations
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to stand for prolonged periods and comfortably lift 50lbs
• Ability to dress appropriately for and work outdoors in all weather conditions
• Friendly demeanor
• Ability to work without direct supervision
• Ability to transport self to and from school location
• Experience in traffic management, outdoor activation, or related field an asset
• First Aid certification is an asset. (will be provided)
• Other duties as required
