Join Us in Creating the Best Places to Live, Shop, Work & Play
As Construction Safety Manager, you will lead health and safety across Southwest Construction's active projects while supporting the continued development of health and safety programs across the Southwest Properties group of companies.
We believe every successful project begins with a safe worksite. This role is instrumental in ensuring our construction teams, trade partners, and project leaders work safely, comply with legislative requirements, and foster a culture where safety is integrated into every phase of construction. In addition to leading safety on our projects, you will contribute to the ongoing enhancement of corporate health and safety initiatives that support our broader organization.
We believe in going beyond the necessary to create inspiring environments. To us, a building is so much more than just a collection of walls under a single roof. At Southwest, we believe an innovative, exceptional, thoughtfully designed building can inspire great things to happen inside and around it.
Here's a Few Reasons Why We Love Where We Work
- Customizable Plan Options for Health & Dental Coverage (Single/Family Plan Options)
- Employee & Family Assistance Program
- 4% Matching GRRSP Program
- Annual Health & Wellness Incentives
- Employee Transit Allowance
- Educational Reimbursement for Eligible Employees/Programs
- Social Events
- Charitable Donation Matching Program
- 1 Paid Volunteer Day for an Organization of Your Choice
- 2 Personal Days Annually
- Employee Discount Program
- Vacation Purchase Program Options for Eligible Employees
What Your Day Will Look Like
You will provide leadership for all aspects of construction health and safety across Southwest Construction's active projects. Working closely with Project Managers, Site Superintendents, consultants, subcontractors, and project teams, you will ensure every project is delivered safely, efficiently, and in compliance with Occupational Health & Safety legislation, company standards, and industry best practices.
While construction safety will be your primary focus, you will also support the continued development, implementation, and administration of health and safety programs across the Southwest Properties group of companies. Your practical construction experience will help strengthen safety programs that support our property management, operations, and corporate teams.
You will work collaboratively with senior leadership and operational teams to continuously improve safety performance, reduce organizational risk, and promote a culture where safety is everyone's responsibility.
Hours of Work: Full-time day hours Monday to Friday, with occasional evening, weekend, and after-hours commitments as operational needs require.
Work Location: Southwest Properties Main Office, with regular travel to active construction sites and company properties throughout the portfolio.
Compensation
This position offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience, qualifications, and demonstrated expertise.
Southwest Properties also offers a comprehensive total rewards package including competitive benefits, retirement savings, professional development opportunities, and wellness programs designed to support your long-term success.
What You'll Be Responsible For
Construction Safety Leadership
- Lead the implementation and continuous improvement of health and safety programs across all Southwest Construction projects.
- Conduct regular site inspections, audits, hazard assessments, and safety observations to ensure compliance with company standards and legislative requirements.
- Partner with Project Managers, Site Superintendents, and subcontractors to proactively identify, assess, and eliminate workplace hazards.
- Develop, implement, and maintain project-specific safety plans, emergency response procedures, fall protection plans, and other required safety documentation.
- Deliver site safety orientations for employees, contractors, consultants, and visitors.
- Monitor subcontractor compliance and provide coaching to promote safe work practices.
- Participate in project planning meetings to ensure safety considerations are integrated throughout each phase of construction.
- Complete regular grounding assurance inspections and verify compliance with fall protection and anchor tie-off requirements.
- Promote a positive safety culture by providing leadership, mentorship, and practical guidance to construction teams.
- Incident Management & Regulatory Compliance
- Lead investigations of workplace incidents, injuries, near misses, and property damage events.
- Complete and monitor the completion of all required regulatory reporting, including WCB and Occupational Health & Safety documentation.
- Identify root causes and implement corrective and preventative actions.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable provincial legislation, regulations, and company safety policies.
- Maintain documentation required to support audits, inspections, and regulatory reviews.
Training & Safety Development
- Develop, coordinate, and deliver construction safety training programs.
- Coordinate and facilitate training including WHMIS, Fall Protection, Personal Protective Equipment, First Aid & CPR, and other mandatory certifications.
- Maintain employee training records and certification requirements.
- Coach supervisors and project teams to strengthen safety leadership and accountability throughout construction operations.
Corporate Health & Safety Programs
- Support the ongoing development and administration of Southwest Properties' Corporate Health & Safety Program.
- Assist with maintaining Southwest Construction's Certificate of Recognition (COR) certification.
- Develop and update corporate safety policies, procedures, safe work practices, and standards.
- Support health and safety initiatives across the Southwest Properties group of companies by providing guidance, resources, and best practices.
- Prepare monthly health and safety reports, performance metrics, and recommendations for senior leadership.
- Participate in corporate audits, program reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Your Environment
This role operates primarily from active construction sites, with additional responsibilities performed at the Southwest Properties Main Office and other company locations.
The successful candidate will regularly work in both office and field environments and should be comfortable working in varying weather conditions, around active construction activities, and in environments involving noise, dust, and other typical construction site conditions.
What Will Help You Succeed
You don't require every qualification listed to add incredible value to our team. If you're passionate about construction safety and excited to help build an exceptional safety culture, we'd love to hear from you.
Our ideal candidate has post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety, Construction Management, or a related discipline, combined with 5–7 years of progressive health and safety experience in the construction industry.
National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) certification and/or Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation is considered an asset.
You'll also bring:
Strong knowledge of commercial and residential construction practices and safety regulations.
Excellent communication, coaching, and relationship-building skills.
Proven ability to influence safety performance across multiple project teams.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
Exceptional attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
A collaborative, proactive, and solutions-focused approach.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and safety management software.
Position requires: Criminal Records Check Completion.

Southwest Properties is committed to attracting and retaining a diverse team who value your experiences, perspectives, and unique identity. We are committed to creating and maintaining an environment that is inclusive, equitable, and welcoming.
Thank you for your interest in Southwest Properties. Those chosen for an interview will be contacted.
We are a team of individuals who get joy from bringing joy to others.
