Company Profile:
Cavvy Energy is a majority Canadian-owned corporation headquartered in Calgary, Alberta with a focus on the exploration, extraction and processing of natural gas. Cavvy Energy owns and operates natural gas and liquids-producing assets in Alberta and British Columbia, with a primary focus on our Foothills assets in Alberta which produce approximately 25,000 boe/day, in addition to our three major sour gas processing facilities. Cavvy Energy employs approximately 300 team members across its operating locations and Calgary head office. We are an inclusive and diverse team with many exciting challenges and opportunities for learning and career growth.
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Field Operations Foreman, with day-to-day direction from the Lead Operator, the Field Operator is responsible for the safe operation and condition of assigned wells, Compressor stations, Booster Compressor stations, and gathering systems within a field area. The Field Operator operates equipment within established operating envelopes, monitors production, and takes corrective action to maintain safe, reliable, on-specification production.
Working from a field station and across dispersed field sites, the Field Operator monitors operations via SCADA/HMI and physical rounds, performs operator preventive maintenance and minor maintenance, supports isolation and work control, executes corrosion-mitigation and chemical programs, and accurately records field data. The role is a key entry and development pathway toward the Lead Operator position.
This is a field-based role with frequent work in open environments with extremes of heat and cold, often in proximity to Highvoltage and/or chemicals which require safety precautions such as protective clothing and equipment, and with significant driving and periods of lone work across dispersed field sites. This day-based role is subject to callouts for work associated with abnormal field operations and/or emergency response activities. This includes weekends, evenings, and holidays. This is a safety-sensitive role that may be subject to testing to ensure fitness to work.
Key Responsibilities:
This role includes the following responsibilities along with other priorities that may be assigned periodically:
Field Operations & Production Integrity:
- Operates and monitors assigned wells, compressor stations and gathering systems within established operating envelopes, delivering safe, reliable, on-specification production.
- Monitors operations via SCADA/HMI and routine physical rounds; takes corrective action and escalates deviations to the Lead Operator.
- Performs routine adjustments (e.g., opening, closing, and adjusting valves and pressures) and switches and operates spared equipment as directed.
- Maintains awareness of facility objectives and production targets for the assigned area.
Routine Operations, Rounds & Preventive Maintenance:
- Completes scheduled operator rounds, checks, and operations PMs for the assigned area on time, recording results and exceptions.
- Performs operator-level minor maintenance and first-line troubleshooting; supports the Lead Operator and Maintenance with repairs as needed.
- Ensures housekeeping and the condition of assigned sites meet expectations.
Safety & Work Control:
- Is accountable for the execution of safe work practices and procedures for the assigned area.
- Writes and reviews Work Control Certificates and Permits to Work with the Field Leads, and is capable of creating permits for unplanned operating work.
- Supports equipment isolation, purging, cleaning, and de-pressuring; ensures blind sheets, car-seal logs, and safeguard overrides are complete and correct, and that isolation/LOTO is followed.
- Recognizes deviations from safe working procedures and takes immediate corrective action, marking up practices for revision.
- Participates actively in safety meetings, inspections, and high-potential pre-job safety meetings; completes safety-equipment checks; reports hazards and near-misses in Maximo.
Integrity, Corrosion & Chemical Programs:
- Executes field corrosion-mitigation activities, including required pigging and batch (inhibitor) schedules.
- Operates and monitors chemical injection programs and maintains chemical inventories and tracking sheets.
- Performs measurement and meter-related checks (e.g., meter calibration support, sampling, and tank gauging) and ensures samples and forms are accurate.
- Ensures waste is handled appropriately and that manifests and fluid-control forms are accurately completed.
Documentation & Reporting:
- Enters work notifications into Maximo for any corrective work required, with the information needed to plan the work.
- Updates the team through logbooks, team meetings, and SCADA notes, and maintains accurate tracking and log sheets.
- Submits month-end data (e.g., fuel-gas usage, venting/flaring, and chemical tracking) to the Lead Operator on time.
- Provides technical support and field information to the Field Planner, Engineering, and Maintenance as required.
Emergency Response:
- Maintains a working knowledge of the Emergency Response Plan and a clear understanding of assigned duties, and performs a role as determined by the Incident Commander.
- Reacts promptly to emergency situations, makes the appropriate decision on ESD/USD, and monitors fire, LEL, and H2S detection systems, taking appropriate corrective action.
- Assists in ERP situations to minimize negative impacts to the public, the environment, the field, and the plant.
Collaboration & Development:
- Works collaboratively with the Lead Operator, fellow operators, the plant team, and Maintenance.
- Maintains a good working relationship with the community and public, responding professionally to questions and concerns regarding operations.
- Pursues skill assessments and qualifications to build competency and progress toward the Lead Operator role.
- Works collaboratively with the Lead Operator to assist with third party companies to bring on production safely and trouble shoot as required.
Education and Work Experience:
- Progression in the Production Field Operations (PFO) / Oil & Gas Production Operator (OGPO) certificate program (entry through intermediate levels) or equivalent field-operations training; a 4th Class Power Engineering certificate is an asset and may be required where registered fired equipment is operated.
- Demonstrated competency on assigned wells, facilities, and equipment, with skill assessments completed for the assigned area(s).
- Field fundamental knowledge to assess and respond to alarms and operational changes, and the ability to react promptly, safely, and logically to emergencies.
- Familiarity with SCADA/HMI and Maximo (or comparable CMMS/EAM); knowledge of Permit to Work, isolation/LOTO, and safe-work practices.
- Awareness of corrosion-mitigation, chemical, and measurement programs.
- Valid Canadian Class 5 driver’s license; current H2S Alive, First Aid, WHMIS, and TDG.
- Good communication and teamwork skills; willingness to accept direction, support junior operators, and work safely in a dispersed field environment.
Conditions of Employment:
- Valid Canadian work authorization.
- Valid Canadian Class 5 driver’s license.
- Cleared criminal history (background) and satisfactory reference checks.
- Compliance with the Company’s fitness-for-work practice including pre-employment screening.
