RELIABILITY ENGINEERS – Work Hard, Play Hard!
Alberta Oil Sands (Fort McMurray/Wood Buffalo Region) – 14/14 Rotation
Heavy Metal Equipment & Rentals is searching for experienced Reliability Engineers for our NEW positions working with our Planning and Maintenance teams in the Alberta Oil Sands.
These opportunities are available within the organization due to continual growth and the need for additional resources to support our growing teams and ever-expanding heavy equipment needs.
Reliability Engineers improve equipment reliability, optimize maintenance strategies, and reduce downtime across a large and diverse fleet of heavy mining equipment. They play a critical role in ensuring that equipment performance meets Heavy Metal Equipment’s standards of safety, quality, and operational excellence.
This position works collaboratively with Mine Managers, Maintenance Superintendents, Planners, Supervisors, and client representatives to analyze equipment performance, identify root causes of failure, and implement sustainable improvements.
An excellent Reliability Engineer will:
- Be self-motivated and results-driven to manage multiple priorities, respond to operational demands, and ensure maintenance objectives are achieved.
- Lead safety efforts by promoting compliance with site rules, conducting field observations, coaching workers, and fostering a strong safety culture.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with employees, contractors, customers, and mine owner representatives.
- Demonstrate proactive problem-solving to address equipment issues, labour challenges, and operational disruptions.
- Go the extra mile when necessary to meet production and maintenance targets, especially during breakdowns or critical operational periods.
- Exhibit strong organizational skills to manage scheduling, staffing, budgets, work orders, and reporting.
- Provide exceptional leadership by setting expectations, coaching supervisors and tradespeople, and holding team members accountable.

Work at the Heart of Canada’s Energy Sector
Based in the Alberta Oil Sands (Fort McMurray/Wood Buffalo Region), you’ll work directly on a mine site on a 14/14 rotation in a safety-first environment. Shifts are 12 hours long, with the potential to work nights.
You will be expected to:
- Maintain Strong Process Control and Analytical Discipline by establishing and monitoring key performance indicators such as availability, MTBF, MTTR, and maintenance cost per hour.
- Build and Maintain Strong Positive Relationships and Work Culture by collaborating with supervisors, planners, technicians, customers, and site leadership.
- Go the Extra Mile to Improve Outcomes for Customers, Team Members, and the Organization by identifying and implementing sustainable reliability improvements.
- Demonstrating Exceptional Technical Leadership Skills by guiding maintenance strategies and supporting data-driven decision-making.
- Lead Root Cause Failure Analyses (RCFA) for major component and equipment failures and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
- Optimize Preventive and Predictive Maintenance Programs to improve equipment reliability and reduce unscheduled downtime.
- Review oil analysis, inspections, and condition monitoring data to detect emerging issues.
- Develop reports and presentations that communicate findings and recommendations to both site teams and customers.
What We’re Looking For:
- A desire to make a difference and take pride in your work

- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Alberta or eligibility to obtain registration is considered an asset
- 5+ years of experience in mining, heavy equipment maintenance, or industrial reliability.
- 3+ years of experience with dozers, haul trucks, shovels, and excavators of all major brands such as CAT, John Deere, Hitachi, and Komatsu
- Strong understanding of reliability engineering principles, root cause failure analysis, and condition monitoring techniques.
- Superior analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Collaborative communication style at all levels of the organization, demonstrating an open, honest, and consistent approach to working with others
- High level of integrity, strong ethics, and compliance with rules and regulations
- Excellent Customer Service skills
- Sound working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite of products, including advanced Excel skills; Power BI experience is considered an asset.
- Experience with SAP, JDE, or other computerized maintenance management systems is considered an asset.
- Must be able to access all mine sites in the Wood Buffalo Region
- Demonstrated ability to pass a respiratory fit test, meet fitness standards, and handle 50 lbs
- Clean Driver's Abstract and Advanced Class 5 License
