Full job description
Location: Fort McMurray, Alberta
Job Type: Parental Replacement, Full-time, Fixed Term
Department: Child and Family Services
Reports to: Supervisor, Prevention
Job Summary:
Under the supervision of the Prevention Supervisor, the Prevention Coordinator is responsible for leading the design and implementation of programming that promotes language, cultural development, and family preservation. This role will develop effective strategies to meet the emotional, psychological, physical, and social support needs of the First Nation’s communities. The vision of prevention programming is to decrease the number of children and families requiring intervention services.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and deliver services that promote culture, participation, safety and wellbeing for community members.
- Develop and implement workshops, cultural and youth summer camps, and group programming through land-based activities, language development, and community programming.
- Work directly with individuals, families and the community to support and build resiliency.
- Create programming designed to promote Cree and Dene cultures, traditions, language, and values.
- Submit bi-weekly reports and statistics to supervisor.
- Model effective community engagement, conflict resolution, facilitation, and crisis intervention.
- Other duties as required.
Skills & Qualifications
- 1-3 years direct experience working within a similar role.
- Minimum High School Diploma or equivalency is required.
- Certificate and/or Diploma in Social Sciences, Child, Youth or Family Studies and/or any Indigenous Studies Certificates is an asset.
- An equivalent combination of training and lived experience may be considered.
- Trauma informed training considered an asset.
- Understanding of Children’s Services and Prevention Programming is an asset.
- Situational awareness knowledge.
- Proficient with computer systems and/or database programs.
- Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work.
- Strong organizational and planning skills.
- Active listening and reflection skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Problem-solving and conflict resolution abilities.
- Demonstrates active self care practices and awareness.
- Knowledge of a Cree or Dene language or culture an asset.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities is considered an asset.
Requirements:
- Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check.
- Child Intervention Record Check.
- Class 5 Drivers License with a clear Drivers abstract.
- Provide after-hours and/or on call response is required.
- Travel required when necessary.
