Job Profile
As a Mechanic Firefighter (Probationary) within the Mechanical Division of the Cambridge Fire Department, you will report to the Division Chief Mechanical Officer and will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following primary functions:
What you will be doing
- Dismantles, inspects, diagnoses, cleans, repairs, overhauls, replaces, installs, maintains, assembles, lubricates, and/or adjusts diesel, gasoline, powered equipment; gasoline, diesel, engines; cooling and exhaust systems; gasoline, diesel, fuel systems; hydraulic systems; air supply systems; air and hydraulic brake systems; clutches; automatic and manual transmissions; drive lines; suspension and steering systems; starting and charging systems; electrical systems; heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems; tires, wheels, and rims; differentials; axles; springs; fluid drives, aux. lithium battery banks; etc.
- Inspects, diagnoses, repairs, replaces, overhauls, adjusts and maintains fuel, exhaust, emission-controlled and electrical systems, starting motors, generators, alternators, and any other auxiliary parts of diesel, gasoline-powered engines, and equipment.
- Utilizes applicable diagnostic tools and software required to troubleshoot and maintain onboard computer-controlled systems to ensure functionality, performance, and reliability of the equipment if maintained.
- Performs fire apparatus system preventative maintenance tasks as defined by the manufacturer and ensures calibration requirements are set to specification.
- Works with other mechanics to facilitate the completion of repairs to vehicles and equipment.
- Carries out preventive maintenance inspections, procedures, servicing, and performs periodic mandatory commercial vehicle inspections (PMCVI's) in accordance with the original equipment manufacturer’s recommendations.
- Designs, fabricates, and fits parts, components, and assemblies.
- Inspects, diagnoses, and repairs SCBA and other personal safety equipment used by Fire personnel.
- Inspects, diagnoses, and repairs fire service equipment, appliances, pumpers, aerials, tankers, and other fire apparatus.
- Performs road and operational tests of equipment for safe operation and to ensure repairs are completed.
- Ensures all vehicles and equipment are maintained in accordance with the Ontario Highway Traffic Act (HTA) and all applicable National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes and standards including any other applicable regulatory requirements.
- Inspects new and existing apparatus and equipment.
- Maintains availability of critical spares and preventative maintenance parts.
- Ensures adequate supply of bulk fuel is maintained at all times.
- Performs routine regulatory inspections of fuel and fuel storage systems ensuring compliance with provincial regulatory standards.
- Cleans work area, and benches; removes oil from the floor; sweeps and disposes of scrap metals.
- Attends training and development workshops and seminars.
- Assists the operator in the safe movement of vehicles and equipment in the shop and yard through the use of verbal and hand signals.
- Responds to after-hour callouts on a rotational basis.
- Occasionally operates fire service vehicles.
- Occasionally performs Fire Pump/Tanker Driver/Operator duties.
Required Qualifications
- Possess a Certified Journeyperson 310T Truck and Coach Certificate of Qualification
- Possess a Certified Journeyperson 310S Automotive Service Technician Certificate of Qualification or be willing to successfully attain it within a mutually agreed time period.
- Master Level Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification or be willing to successfully attain it within a mutually agreed time period.
- Previous Fire Department and/or Emergency Vehicle experience shall be considered beneficial.
- Possess NFPA 1001 Firefighter I & II including Hazardous Materials Operations (mandatory; must meet O. Reg. 343/22)
- Ability to accurately diagnose and solve mechanical problems.
- Must possess a valid Ontario Class "D" Driver's License with a "Z" air brake endorsement.
- Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC).
- Possess a current First Responder Certificate or higher with BLS level CPR (Canadian Red Cross preferred)(Considered an asset).
- Must be physically capable of performing the required duties of Mechanic-Firefighter and working outside in varying climatic conditions.
- Fluent in speaking, reading, and writing English; able to communicate clearly under high pressure.
- Demonstrated interest in personal and professional development and in continuing education through ongoing learning.
- Ability to work shifts and attend after-hours call-outs and emergency situations.
- Familiarity with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and the regulations that apply to this work, including WHMIS training.
- Be able to maintain vehicle and maintenance records in a computerized environment.
Education

- Proof of your current and valid certificate(s) and/or educational qualifications.
- Confirmation that you are physically able to perform the essential duties of the position, as assessed through our third-party provider, prior to commencement in the position.
- Current and valid Police Vulnerable Sector Check to be provided prior to commencement in this position. Must be free of criminal convictions for which a pardon has not been granted.
- Valid 310T Truck and Coach Technician Certificate of Qualification and, if applicable, a valid 310S Automotive Service Technician Certificate of Qualification.
- Valid DZ driver's license; driver’s abstract with fewer than three CVOR demerit points/infractions in the last three years required.
- Valid Pleasure Craft Operator Card.
- Worker Health and Safety Awareness Training Certificate from the Ministry of Labour.
- International Travel Passport.
Your compensation
This position has an annual salary range of $65,797 (55% of 1st Class Mechanic – Fire Fighter Rate) with progression to $119,632 (100% of 1st Class Mechanic – Fire Fighter Rate) (2026 Rates).
Hours of work
This position shall work a (40) hour work week. This requires working shifts, including weekends and holidays.
