Position: Experienced Property Assessor

Salary: $67,430.26 - $92,315.09

Position Type: Full Time, Permanent

Location: Remote First, within Nova Scotia

Department: Assessment Operations

Union Status: Unionized position with the NSGEU

About PVSC

Property Valuation Services Corporation (PVSC) is an independent, not-for-profit organization that provides property assessment services and information to Nova Scotia municipalities and property owners.

We employ approximately 135 people who live and work in over 60 communities across the province.

Local governments use our annual property assessments to establish their municipal property tax rates, which fund important local services and infrastructure, and build communities.

About the Opportunity

As an Assessor, you’ll help determine fair and accurate property assessments by gathering and analyzing property information, reviewing market activity, and communicating with property owners, municipalities, and colleagues

Each day brings different work, from inspecting properties and reviewing sales and market trends to interpreting legislation, speaking with property owners, and preparing appeal-related assessment information.

What You’ll Do

  • Investigate complex valuation questions.
  • Analyze market information and identify meaningful trends.
  • Apply legislation and valuation principles with sound professional judgement.
  • Communicate technical information clearly to a wide range of audiences.
  • Build productive relationships with property owners, municipalities, and colleagues.
  • Work independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment.
  • Continuously learn and improve your professional practice.

What You’ll Bring

A university degree or college diploma is preferred; however, an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will also be considered.

This role may be a strong fit if you are curious, detail-oriented, comfortable working with information, and able to explain complex topics clearly. You will also bring the following skills and competencies:

  • A minimum of 3 years' experience as an Assessor or in a comparable valuation role.
  • A recognized professional designation (AIMA, MIMA, CRA, AACI or IAAO RES).
  • The ability to independently manage a portfolio of assessment work and apply valuation principles across a variety of property types.

Assets

  • Extensive technical expertise in property valuation and assessment legislation.
  • Experience representing assessments during appeals.
  • The ability to coach, mentor and provide technical guidance to other assessors.
  • A commitment to improving consistency, quality and professional practice across the organization.
  • Independently manages a portfolio and applies valuation principles across a variety of property types.
  • Experience with GIS, CAMA, SAP, Salesforce, or similar enterprise systems.
  • Experience interpreting legislation, regulations, or technical standards.
  • Experience serving as a relatable technical resource, providing guidance to peers, and supports organizational consistency and quality standards.

Special Requirements

  • This role requires periodic travel throughout the province. A valid Class 5 driver's license and access to reliable transportation are required.
