Job Description – Story and Public Voice Coordinator

Position: Story and Public Voice Coordinator

Team: Advocacy
Reporting to: Manager of Community Mobilization

Direct Reports: Storytelling Specialist

Summary

The Story and Public Voice Coordinator helps First Light connect with community through clear, engaging communications that reflect Indigenous histories, cultures, and contemporary realities. The role brings together storytelling, design, and communications planning to share the organization’s work, strengthen relationships, and help people find opportunities to participate.

Reporting to the Manager of Community Mobilization, the Coordinator oversees First Light’s day-to-day communications across digital and printed media, maintaining a consistent organizational voice and visual identity. Working closely with staff across departments, the Coordinator translates program information, community stories, and organizational priorities into accessible communications that support community connection, public learning, and advocacy.

The Coordinator supervises the Storytelling Specialist, supporting creative initiative while coordinating priorities, production schedules, and review processes. The role combines hands-on content development with sound judgment, ensuring communications respect cultural protocols, consent, confidentiality, and approval processes.

Who You Are & What You Carry

You are a creative, thoughtful communicator who understands that how a story is shared matters as much as what it says. You listen closely, build trusting relationships, and help people share their perspectives in ways that respect their voice and wishes.

You enjoy turning ideas and complex information into clear, engaging communications. You care about the details, adapt your approach to different audiences, and look for ways to ensure information is shared in inclusive and accessible ways.

You are organized and dependable, comfortable balancing planned work with emerging requests. You give clear direction and constructive feedback while making room for others’ ideas. You exercise discretion, recognize when an issue needs guidance, and work through challenges with colleagues.

What You’ll Do

Communications Planning

  • Develop and maintain First Light’s annual social media strategy and shared editorial calendar, coordinating program promotion, storytelling campaigns, events, and significant dates.
  • Meet regularly with teams to identify communications needs, plan upcoming work, and ensure messaging accurately reflects their programs and priorities.
  • Coordinate communications requests, production schedules, and publication deadlines, identifying capacity pressures and resolving competing priorities with the Manager of Community Mobilization.
  • Review audience engagement and communications analytics with the Manager of Community Mobilization and the Storytelling Specialist, using the findings to improve content and communications strategies.

Storytelling

  • Create and publish content that shares First Light’s work and connects community members with programs, services, and opportunities.
  • Plan stories and campaigns with the Storytelling Specialist, supporting their creative ideas and coordinating photography, video, interviews, and supporting graphics.
  • Support community members in sharing their own stories in ways that respect their perspectives and consent.
  • Review and approve content within established approval processes, ensuring accuracy, accessibility, and consistency with First Light’s voice, and adapting it for different audiences and channels.
  • Oversee social media publishing and responses to comments and messages, referring questions and concerns to appropriate staff.

Community Engagement

  • Produce the monthly newsletter and First Light Field Notes, gathering and reviewing contributions from staff, Elders, and community members.
  • Prepare additional community emails for program registration, major events, and other organizational communications.
  • Coordinate the public-facing program registration process, including forms, event web pages, promotional materials, and synchronized email and social media releases.
  • Review requests to share information from external organizations and determine appropriate communications channels.
  • Work with program teams to keep public information accurate, timely, and accessible, using digital and printed formats to reach community members.

Brand Stewardship

  • Maintain First Light’s brand strategy, visual identity, and logo standards, supporting consistent use through shared templates, the Canva asset library, and guidance to staff.
  • Maintain website content and design, coordinating technical support as needed.
  • Provide editing, design, layout, and review for publications and public-facing materials, working with staff responsible for their content.
  • Coordinate proofing, required leadership approvals, and production with printing, signage, and merchandise suppliers.
  • Manage First Light’s online merchandise store and coordinate order fulfilment.

Team Leadership

  • Supervise the Storytelling Specialist, setting priorities, assigning work, reviewing performance, and supporting professional development.
  • Attend event committee meetings to ensure that conversations inform the development of communications materials.
  • Guide staff in applying First Light’s brand, tone, and communications standards.
  • Escalate sensitive communications issues to the Manager of Community Mobilization and help determine an appropriate response, involving the Director as needed.

Skills, Experience, and Requirements

First Light recognizes that knowledge and experience come in many forms, including lived experience, cultural teachings, community care, professional experience, and formal education. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

  • Post-secondary education in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Design, Indigenous Studies, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Strong understanding of the rights, histories, cultures, and lived realities of Indigenous Peoples in Newfoundland and Labrador, including urban Indigenous communities.
  • Experience developing communications across digital and printed formats, including social media content, newsletters, promotional materials, and publications.
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with the ability to adapt information for different audiences.
  • Graphic design and layout skills, including experience using Canva or comparable design tools and applying brand standards.
  • Experience maintaining websites, managing email communications and social media platforms, and using analytics to inform communications decisions.
  • Experience coordinating projects, managing publication schedules, and balancing requests from multiple teams.
  • Experience supervising or providing direction and feedback to staff.
  • Understanding of accessible and inclusive communications
