Company: Precise Downhole Solutions Ltd.
Precise Downhole Solutions is seeking a motivated, hands-on Field Engineer to support the installation, commissioning, and operation of our downhole monitoring and production technologies. This position is ideal for a recent engineering graduate or an early-career engineer with up to two years of relevant experience.
The successful candidate will work alongside our field installation teams across the PureLight, Oura, and Core product lines. The role combines field execution, technical troubleshooting, data-acquisition system commissioning, project reporting, and office-based engineering support.
The position also provides exposure to project management, customer engagement, technical sales, and product development. Precise offers a structured career-progression path supported by ongoing technical training, professional development, and relevant industry coursework.
Previous experience with every technology listed below is not required. Precise will provide product-specific and technical training to candidates who demonstrate strong aptitude, initiative, professionalism, and problem-solving ability.
Key Responsibilities
- Support field installations and commissioning activities across Precise’s PureLight, Oura, and Core product lines.
- Configure, commission, and validate customer data-acquisition units, surface instrumentation, sensors, communication systems, and associated software.
- Perform onsite troubleshooting of customer acquisition-unit systems, including instrumentation, electrical, software, communication, and basic networking issues.
- Work with standard industrial communication and commissioning protocols, including Modbus and OPC.
- Perform basic network troubleshooting involving IP addressing, device connectivity, communication settings, cables, switches, and related hardware.
- Verify system operation, sensor response, communications, and data quality before equipment is placed into service.
- Work with a broad range of downhole and surface sensors, including pressure, temperature, fiber-optic, and production-monitoring systems.
- Coordinate with project managers, applications engineers, field personnel, manufacturing teams, and customers during project execution.
- Prepare and submit complete, accurate, and timely field-service reports, commissioning records, equipment documentation, and project closeout packages.
- Review field-executed work to confirm compliance with project, quality, and customer requirements.
- Provide office-based technical and administrative support between field assignments.
- Participate in project planning, scheduling, scope reviews, risk assessments, resource coordination, and project closeout activities.
- Attend customer and internal sales meetings to provide technical input, discuss field requirements, and support the development of project solutions.
- Assist with preparing technical scopes, execution plans, equipment requirements, and project estimates.
- Participate in the organization’s Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment objectives and continuous-improvement initiatives.
- Support research and development, qualification testing, new-product field trials, and product-improvement programs.
- Participate in customer training and provide professional onsite technical support.
- Travel throughout North America and internationally based on project requirements.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Petroleum, Computer, or a related engineering discipline.
- Recent graduate or up to two years of experience in field engineering, instrumentation, commissioning, oilfield services, industrial automation, or a similar role.
- Comfortable working in high-pressure, fast-paced environments where priorities and field conditions may change quickly.
- Comfortable working in both indoor and outdoor environments, including office, shop, industrial, and active oil and gas locations.
- Willing to work extended or non-standard hours when required by field operations and project schedules.
- Strong troubleshooting and practical problem-solving abilities.
- Comfortable working with sensors, data-acquisition equipment, electrical systems, mechanical assemblies, and computer-based diagnostic tools.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to accurate technical reporting.
- Interest in developing customer-facing, commercial, and project-management skills.
- Able to work independently and collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
- Willing and able to travel up to 60% of the time, including international travel.
- Valid driver’s licence and ability to obtain required travel documentation.
- Eligible for registration as an Engineer-in-Training in Alberta.
Preferred Experience
The following experience is considered an asset but is not required:
- Exposure to oil and gas operations, downhole instrumentation, fiber-optic sensing, artificial lift, pressure and temperature monitoring, or industrial data-acquisition systems.
- Familiarity with Modbus, OPC, Ethernet, serial communications, TCP/IP networking, or other industrial communication protocols.
- Experience with electrical test equipment, PLCs, data loggers, instrumentation software, or acquisition-unit systems.
- Previous field, co-op, internship, trades, or hands-on technical experience.
- Familiarity with technical drawings, wiring diagrams, commissioning procedures, and quality documentation.
- Exposure to project coordination, customer presentations, technical sales, or proposal preparation.
Training and Career Development
Precise recognizes that early-career candidates may not have experience with every product, protocol, or field activity. Comprehensive training will be provided to capable individuals who demonstrate the aptitude and commitment required to succeed in the role.
Development opportunities will include:
- Structured onboarding and product-specific technical training.
- Ongoing training across the PureLight, Oura, and Core product lines.
- Training in acquisition systems, instrumentation, industrial communication protocols, networking, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
- Field mentoring from experienced engineers, project managers, and installation personnel.
- Technical courses and industry-specific training relevant to the employee’s responsibilities and career goals.
- Progressive responsibility for commissioning, troubleshooting, customer support, and field execution.
- Exposure to project management, including planning, scheduling, resource coordination, reporting, and project closeout.
- Participation in customer presentations, technical sales meetings, and opportunity-development discussions.
- Involvement in R&D programs, qualification testing, and the commercialization of new technology.
- Opportunities to advance into senior field engineering, applications engineering, project management, technical sales, operations leadership, or product-development roles.
What Precise Offers
- A structured career-development and advancement program.
- Comprehensive technical and product training.
- Continual professional development and relevant industry coursework.
- Direct involvement with advanced downhole sensing and production technologies.
- Hands-on experience across multiple engineering disciplines and product lines.
- Opportunities to participate in international projects, technology trials, and new-product development.
- Exposure to the complete project lifecycle—from initial customer discussions through field execution and final reporting.
- Mentorship from experienced engineering, operations, sales, and field-service personnel.
- Increasing responsibility based on demonstrated technical capability, initiative, and performance.
This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career engineer who enjoys solving technical problems, working directly with equipment, travelling to project locations, and developing a broad foundation in field engineering, project management, customer engagement, and technical sales.
