Plant Manager
Leduc, AB
Our client is a leading Western Canadian manufacturer of specialized heavy industrial equipment for the North American market. With a well-established reputation for engineering excellence and custom-built reliability, they serve the mining, construction, and energy sectors as a sophisticated, mid-sized organization that prides itself on a culture of precision and a streamlined, professional administrative team.
This is a high-impact leadership role designed for a transformation-focused professional who excels in complex, highly customized manufacturing environments where no two projects are the same. Managing an operation of approximately 21,000 production hours per month across a 24/7, four-shift model, the Plant Manager will take full ownership of the facility’s performance.
The successful candidate must be a "deep diver" who understands shift dynamics and can lead a veteran workforce of welders and fabricators through a period of significant growth and investment in people. This is an opportunity for a leader who values professional autonomy and has the expertise to assess, plan, and optimize a high-mix production environment.
Key Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the Plant Manager include, but are not limited to:
Operational Excellence & Technical Ownership
- Manage production sequencing in an environment of high customization where no two jobs are the same; adapt planning to ensure seamless flow.
- Own the plant performance end-to-end, including facilities maintenance, material handling, and robotics.
- Direct responsibility for material processing, welding of large and small assemblies, coatings, and complex air, hydraulic, and electrical final assembly.
- Ensure quality is built into every stage, culminating in the oversight of unit testing and Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) signoffs.
Data-Driven Performance & Quantitative Analysis
- Lead the operation using statistics, numbers, and mathematical equations to model capacity and labor efficiency.
- Utilize ERP systems and advanced Excel to audit estimated vs. actual labor hours, analyze variances, and build forecasting dashboards.
- Implement Lean manufacturing principles—including flow optimization, bottleneck management, and waste reduction—to reduce WIP and process variation.
Leadership & Change Management
- Develop and lead direct reports. Challenge existing processes and drive modernizing changes.
- Lead with a "head-on" approach to problem-solving, offering honest opinions and transparent feedback at all levels.
- Assess current departmental structures and implement structured growth and training plans to address identified skills gaps.
- Navigate external market variables by instilling confidence and disciplined execution across all shifts.
Attributes & Skills
Include but are not limited to:
- A deep comfort with quantitative modeling and the math required to balance high-mix production demand.
- Strong interpersonal skills with a proven ability to deal with issues directly, honestly, and professionally.
- Significant experience leading welders, fabricators, and heavy-trades personnel.
- A track record of taking full ownership of an operation and delivering results with minimal oversight.
Education & Experience
Include but are not limited to:
- 10+ years of progressive manufacturing leadership, specifically within custom fabrication or oilfield equipment manufacturing.
- A Degree in Mathematics, Statistical Analytics, or a related field is required, reflecting the heavy emphasis on quantitative modeling.
- A documented history of improving throughput, reducing production duration, and driving disciplined execution in complex environments.
- Exceptional scheduling, purchasing coordination, and planning proficiency within an ERP-driven environment.
In addition to a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package, our client can offer an exciting and challenging work environment, as well as a company culture that values resilience, a proactive work ethic, and a dedicated commitment to excellence.
If you believe that you could thrive in our environment and are interested in pursuing this opportunity, please submit your resume for consideration.
