Peter Ballantyne Group of Companies (PBGOC) is seeking an experienced, commercially minded, and relationship-focused Managing Director, Vegetation Management to lead and grow its Vegetation Management division.
Reporting to Executive Leadership, the Managing Director is accountable for the overall operational, financial, and strategic performance of the division, ensuring the safe, efficient, and successful delivery of vegetation management services across Saskatchewan and surrounding regions.
This role provides overall business leadership for the division, with accountability for financial performance, contract administration, client relationships, business development, and long-term growth. Working closely with field operations leadership, the Managing Director provides executive oversight to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, profitably, and in alignment with organizational objectives, while supporting the continued growth and sustainability of the business.
The successful candidate is an accomplished leader with strong operational and commercial acumen who thrives in a dynamic environment. They bring a proven ability to balance strategic thinking with operational execution while building trusted relationships with clients, Indigenous communities, utility partners, contractors, regulators, and internal teams.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Operational Leadership
- Lead the overall operations of the Vegetation Management division, ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
- Develop and execute the division's annual business plan, operational objectives, and performance targets.
- Develop operational plans, workforce strategies, project schedules, and resource allocation plans that support divisional objectives.
- Monitor project performance, productivity, quality, safety, and environmental compliance while driving continuous operational improvement.
- Provide executive oversight to complex or high-value projects, proactively managing operational, contractual, and commercial risks.
- Provide strategic oversight of project execution while empowering field leadership to manage the day-to-day technical delivery of work.
- Champion operational excellence through continuous improvement initiatives that enhance efficiency, profitability, and client satisfaction.
Business Development & Strategic Growth
- Identify and pursue new business opportunities that support the continued growth of the Vegetation Management division.
- Develop and strengthen executive-level relationships with utility partners, Indigenous communities, government agencies, regulators, contractors, and key clients to support long-term growth and client retention.
- Lead business development activities, including proposal development, client presentations, competitive bids, contract negotiations, and strategic partnerships.
- Monitor industry trends, market opportunities, and emerging service offerings to support long-term growth and diversification.
- Collaborate with Executive Leadership to develop and execute divisional growth strategies aligned with PBGOC's long-term vision.
Project & Contract Management
- Provide executive oversight throughout the project lifecycle, from planning and execution through successful completion.
- Ensure contractual obligations, client expectations, and operational commitments are consistently achieved.
- Oversee contract administration activities, including change orders, claims management, contract compliance, client invoicing, progress reporting, and project closeout.
- Monitor project performance, labour productivity, equipment utilization, financial performance, and project risks, implementing corrective actions where required.
- Coordinate with internal departments, project managers, field teams, subcontractors, and clients to ensure seamless project delivery.
- Review project scopes, budgets, schedules, risk assessments, and performance metrics to support informed decision-making.
- Ensure accurate project reporting, documentation, and performance measurement across the division.
Financial & Business Management
- Develop and manage the division's annual operating and capital budgets.
- Monitor financial performance, project profitability, forecasting, and key operational metrics, implementing corrective actions where required.
- Review divisional KPIs, financial reporting, and operational performance to ensure revenue growth, margin improvement, forecasting accuracy, and responsible stewardship of company resources.
- Support business planning through financial modelling, business case development, and capital investment analysis.
- Ensure responsible stewardship of company assets, equipment, financial resources, and operational expenditures.
- Drive sustainable profitability while supporting the division's continued growth and long-term success.
Leadership & Team Development
- Provide strategic leadership, mentorship, and direction to project managers, field supervisors, and administrative staff.
- Build and develop a high-performing leadership team through coaching, succession planning, accountability, and employee development.
- Promote a culture of safety, professionalism, collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Support recruitment, workforce planning, performance management, and leadership development initiatives.
- Foster an inclusive workplace that reflects PBGOC's values and commitment to Indigenous partnerships and community success.
ROLE CRITERIA:
- Minimum 8–10 years of progressive leadership experience within vegetation management, utility services, forestry, environmental services, construction, or a related industry, including experience leading multi-disciplinary operational teams.
- UTT or UTW Certification, or comparable technical utility vegetation management experience, is considered an asset but is not required.
- Exceptional strategic planning, organizational, and execution skills, with the ability to lead multiple business initiatives while delivering operational and financial results.
- Demonstrated success leading senior project management and field operations teams within a complex operating environment.
- Strong understanding of industrial, construction, and field operations, with the ability to align operational execution with broader business objectives.
- Proven ability to develop executive-level client and stakeholder relationships that foster long-term partnerships, business expansion, and revenue growth.
- Demonstrated experience in contract administration, commercial negotiations, project financial management, and leading complex client relationships within utility, construction, industrial, or infrastructure environments.
- Contract Administration & Commercial Management.
- Strong financial and commercial acumen, including budgeting, forecasting, financial modelling, business case development, project profitability, capital investment analysis, and financial performance management.
- Experience developing new business opportunities, responding to competitive bids and RFPs, negotiating contracts, and expanding service offerings is considered an asset.
- Experience working collaboratively with Indigenous communities, organizations, and stakeholders is considered a strong asset.
- Knowledge of utility corridor maintenance, right-of-way clearing, environmental compliance, and applicable safety regulations is considered an asset.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, leadership, and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and build trusted relationships across all levels of an organization.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence with the ability to travel throughout Saskatchewan and neighbouring provinces as required.
