We are currently looking for an experienced Manager, Payroll and Benefits to join our team. This role is an integral senior member of the larger Human Resources team with responsibility for strategically driving excellence in payroll, benefits, and pension management as well as leading the administration of the HRMS UKG within the organization. This position is based at our Oakville head office and may include a combination of virtual and in-office work. This is a permanent full-time position with generous vacation, full benefits, and company-matched pension plan.

Reporting to the Director, Human Resources, as our Manager, Payroll and Benefits, you will provide a range of support with payroll and benefits functions including managing the processing of payroll, benefits and pension plan administration, updating/maintaining/reconfiguring the UKG system, managing the year-end process, liaising with government agencies, and managing one direct report.

You are an enthusiastic professional with extensive full-cycle payroll experience. You value employee engagement and thrive in a fast-paced environment. It is essential to be an effective communicator, organized, and able to work independently and collaboratively with a proactive approach. The Manager, Payroll and Benefits interacts with all levels of staff across the organization and ensures employees are supported with high quality information. This position demands the utmost discretion and a high level of confidentiality. You must be able to multitask and successfully manage periods of stress due to tight deadlines.

Starting salary range: $85,722 – $93,678

KEY FUNCTIONS:

Payroll Management:

  • Manages full bi-weekly payroll for 700+ employees and serves as primary payroll subject matter expert for Finance, HR, and external providers
  • Prepares the Workplace Safety Insurance Bureau remittance on a monthly basis
  • Generates payroll general ledger, tax funding request and supporting documentation for Finance
  • Reconciles payroll accounts as per Finance
  • Creates ad-hoc payroll reports as requested using UKG and Excel
  • Prepares payroll files for closing year-end, processes T4’s, T4 Summary Reports, T2200’s, and other year-end reconciliations by February 28th annually

Benefits and Pension Management:

  • Manages group benefits enrolments and premium payments with the group carrier monthly
  • Reconciles benefits deductions to payroll on a monthly basis
  • Manages group pension plan enrolments and remits contributions to pension provider bi-weekly
  • Manages the company Health Spending Account

UKG HRMS Management:

  • Responsible for the management and upkeep of the UKG HRMS related to business structure, payroll configuration, scheduling module, benefits module, payroll processing, employee access, security, etc.
  • Trains new employees in accessing UKG; trains new managers in accessing and managing their team scheduling in UKG .

People Management:

  • Actively promotes an inclusive work environment that is free from racism, discrimination and oppression of any kind.
  • Effectively manages the performance of direct reports through auditing, monitoring and regular performance reviews
  • Ensures team members understand and are aligned to their key accountabilities and perform to the expected level

QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION:

  • Minimum of community college diploma in Business, Accounting or equivalent
  • Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation or working towards Payroll Leadership Professional (PCP) designation with the National Payroll Institute (NPI) is required

EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:

  • Minimum 5-7 years full-cycle payroll experience
  • Previous experience with UltiPro or UKG payroll system preferred
  • Minimum 5 years group benefits and pension administration experience
  • Excellent knowledge of payroll best practices and compliance requirements
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the Employment Standards Act as it relates to payroll
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles as they apply to payroll
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor and lead staff
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team member
  • Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational skills with proven ability to meet deadlines
  • Analytical and detail-oriented
  • Advanced skill level in Excel required
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
