Full job description
Worley Canada Construction is a leader in industrial construction in Alberta and western Canada. Our employees enjoy exciting careers in fabrication, modularization, field installation, and professional support services for some of world's most challenging heavy-oil facilities, gas plants, power-stations, renewable energy, and other industrial projects. As part of the global Worley team, we enjoy shared resources and opportunities with more than 20 Canadian locations and 40 countries.
Worley Canada Construction is looking for a Materials Controller for our growing Materials Management team to work in Blackfalds, AB.
Work Conditions
- Site‑based role on a major industrial construction project in Blackfalds, Alberta.
- Shift schedule: 4 days on & 3 days off.
- Travel and LOA are not provided – local candidates only.
- Must hold a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation.
Key Responsibilities
Material Handling & Logistics
- Coordinate material deliveries to and from site in collaboration with Procurement
- Prepare accurate Bills of Lading and shipping documentation, when required for outbound shipments
- Provide support to Material Handlers to ensure receiving, identification, and documentation processes are executed in accordance with project requirements
- Ensure alignment between physical material handling activities and system expectations, without performing routine field transactions
- Support safe, organized, and efficient material laydown and movement across site
Material Receiving Readiness & System Control
- Ensure readiness for material receipt, including verification of expected deliveries, documentation requirements, and system preparedness (e.g., material master data, heat number structures, required attributes)
- Support Material Handlers in the receiving process by ensuring requirements, documentation, and system expectations are clearly understood prior to receipt
- Maintain accurate, real-time material records within the material management system (SiteSense) by verifying that all transactions (receipts, issues, transfers) are completed correctly and in a timely manner
- Validate that system records reflect physical material status, and coordinate resolution of discrepancies between system and field conditions
- Ensure all material data, including heat numbers, serial numbers, and supporting documentation (e.g., MTRs, CRNs), is complete, accurate, and traceable
- Provide guidance and oversight on transaction processes, without routinely performing transactional receiving activities
Issue Resolution & Coordination
- Own the coordination and escalation of material discrepancies (OS&D/UOSD), following initial identification and recording by Material Handlers
- Interface with Procurement, suppliers, and clients to drive timely resolution of material issues
- Coordinate shipment schedules and site delivery timelines, including client-supplied (free issue) materials
- Interface with Home Office and project teams to ensure timely completion of procurement and materials management activities
- Support invoice validation and resolution where material discrepancies exist
Construction Readiness & Execution
- Align material availability, staging, and issuing with construction priorities and sequencing, as communicated by site supervision
- Work closely with Construction, Planning, and Materials teams to understand workface requirements and material demand
- Proactively identify and escalate material constraints, shortages, or discrepancies that may impact construction execution
- Support work package readiness by ensuring materials are visible, traceable, and available when required
- Maintain continuous communication with construction teams to respond to changes in priority or sequencing
Quality, Traceability & Compliance
- Ensure all materials are received, stored, and issued in a manner that preserves identification, condition, and traceability
- Maintain complete, accurate, and audit-ready material records in accordance with project and client requirements
- Support quality and inspection processes by ensuring material documentation is available and properly linked to material records
This role is:
- Accountable for materials data accuracy, traceability, and system integrity
- Responsible for ensuring readiness and control of material receiving processes
- A key contributor to construction readiness and execution alignment
- A problem solver who proactively identifies and resolves material-related issues
- A collaborative partner across construction, procurement, and materials teams
This role is not:
- Solely a physical material handling role: this position includes significant system accountability and coordination responsibilities
- Responsible for executing routine material receipt transactions or physically receiving materials, except where required to support the team or maintain continuity of operations
- Responsible for setting construction priorities or sequencing work
- A passive coordination role: this position requires ownership of material issues and timely resolution
- Responsible for procurement decisions
Qualifications
- Completion of post-secondary education or a recognized trades certification.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in industrial construction, preferably in a field-based materials role.
- Practical knowledge of industrial materials (pipe, valves, fittings, instrumentation, equipment, and electrical components) and applicable codes and standards
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, including piping isometrics is an asset.
- Experience supporting fabrication, modularization, and/or field assembly activities (asset).
- Proven experience using digital materials management systems (e.g., AVEVA ERM, SAP, JD Edwards, SiteSense), with strong focus on data accuracy and transaction control
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; experience with Power Apps or reporting tools is an asset.
