Position Overview

UP Vertical Farms Ltd is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented, and organized Accountant to join our Accounting team. This permanent, full-time, on-site position provides hands-on exposure to full-cycle accounting functions within a fast-paced manufacturing and agri-technology environment.

The Accountant will support the Controller in maintaining accurate financial records, processing transactions, preparing reconciliations, and ensuring compliance with applicable federal and provincial legislation. This role is ideal for an early-career accounting professional seeking to build technical expertise in financial reporting, payroll support, cost accounting, and regulatory compliance.

This position reports directly to the Controller and works closely with operations, HR, and department managers. Work hours are primarily scheduled during regular daytime business hours, with occasional flexibility required during month-end and year-end periods.

Performance will be evaluated based on accuracy of work, timeliness of task completion, attention to detail, adherence to internal controls, and overall contribution to the finance team.

Duties and Responsibilities

Include but are not limited to:

  • Manage daily bookkeeping: accounts payable/receivable, journal entries, payroll, and ROEs.
  • Process invoices, payments, and employee benefits; reconcile accounts and bank statements.
  • Maintain accurate financial records, ledgers, and reporting for management decisions.
  • Support budgeting, cost analysis, and grant tracking, including proposal submissions and reporting.
  • Oversee general office operations: supplies, mail, security system, scheduling, and meeting coordination.
  • Prepare and submit tax documents (T1, T4, T4A, T5, T3, GST/PST) and support audits.
  • Assist with payroll calculations, deductions, and remittance of taxes.
  • Monitor AR/AP schedules, fuel cards, contractor payments, and expense reporting.
  • Implement process improvements and automation in financial operations.
  • Perform miscellaneous administrative support as needed to ensure smooth operations.Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in accounting, payroll, and benefits.
  • Proficiency in accounting/payroll systems (ADP Workforce Now, ICICLE, Optimal, QuickBooks Online, ERP).
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license and eligibility to work in Canada.
  • Experience with process automation and efficiency tools preferred.

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational, multitasking, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential financial information with discretion.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with internal teams.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing accounting and inventory management is an asset.
