Your role
CBC News Calgary is seeking a skilled video producer to join our visual storytelling team.
You are an audience-focused professional committed to telling original visual stories that reflect the diversity of Calgary and southern Alberta.
Reporting to the Senior Producer, Visuals, you love to come up with your own fresh story ideas. You also enjoy collaborating with colleagues, and overseeing the entire production process from planning to posting the final product. Your platform delivery list includes CBC Calgary’s FAST Channel, YouTube, TikTok, cbc.ca, radio, and television–you know how to tailor your storytelling to each of these platforms and their audiences. You do this, in part, because you possess superior technical skills for field production.
You don’t mind helping colleagues get their video over the finishing line through final packaging and platform delivery. You embrace the daily hustle and tight deadlines of working in a big city newsroom.
You understand the people who live and work in Alberta’s distinct political climate and energy-driven economy. You love it when you meet someone with a different perspective and life experience than your own.
Possessing a positive and collaborative attitude, you care about the people you work with and have a deep appreciation for different perspectives, opinions, and experiences. You live and promote the values of diversity, inclusion, and respectful work culture. You are hungry to learn new things and receive feedback on your work. In turn, you love sharing your high-level skills and experience with others as a mentor in the craft of visual storytelling.
This role requires a full-time on-site presence. The regular schedule for this position is late morning to early evening, Wednesday through Sunday. The successful candidate must be flexible around working varied shifts and have the ability to travel out-of-town on short notice.
Key tasks:
- Conceives, pitches, develops, and edits story ideas and concepts tied to the news cycle. Helps determine or influence the editorial direction of a story.
- Develops story content including researching, writing, interviewing, shooting, generating, and/or editing of written and visual material.
- Determines the visual style, pace, tempo, and format of the story item relative to the platform it is primarily for. Should be familiar with trends and production elements specific to various video platforms.
- Finalizes packaging for videos produced by other CBC Calgary staff to ensure proper delivery and posting to all digital platforms.
- Maintains an up-to-date video planning documentation that ensures clear and detailed communication from the evening crew to the morning crew
- Provides mentorship and supports journalists as they build their video storytelling skills, helping them create stronger, more engaging content for all platforms.
- Helps with development of new production methods using contemporary visual storytelling trends, practices, tools and techniques, to continually improve CBC’s content and best practices.
- Scouts locations and identifies special requirements such as audio, lighting, camera angles, and equipment, including production limitations.
- Prepares, aligns, sets up, and operates small format, cinema, and traditional broadcast cameras and ancillary equipment, ensuring optimal visual, audio, and technical quality under prevailing conditions for multiple platforms and deadlines.
- Provides technical guidance, expertise, and support, focused on content production techniques and workflows.
- Undertakes out-of-town travel for breaking news and planned assignments.
Your profile:
- A combination of education and experience equivalent to a degree or certificate in Television Production, Journalism or a related field and 5 years of practical industry experience.
- Strong sense of creativity, initiative, and a high degree of responsibility for the accuracy and quality of work throughout the complete production cycle.
- Proven record of highly creative, innovative visual storytelling.
- Superior level of technical knowledge with a variety of cameras, broadcast equipment and non-linear editing platforms.
- Understanding of visual gathering, visual production, and post-production methods with a focus on storytelling.
- Experience reflecting diverse and contemporary communities in visual storytelling.
- Experience working alongside a reporter to produce a story.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required.
- Ability to work in a deadline-driven environment while maintaining a professional attitude.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to pursue the acquisition of story elements with a minimum of supervision.
- Ability and willingness to work overtime and various shift patterns, including overnights, weekdays and weekends as required. Some last minute travel may occasionally be required.
