General Purpose
Reporting to the Manager of Operations, the Sergeant is responsible for supervision, coordination, and leading a frontline operational platoon assigned to the Campus Safety Office. The Sergeant ensures the safety and security of the university community through proactive patrol supervision, incident response, investigations, policy enforcement, emergency management support, and community engagement.
The Sergeant provides frontline leadership, mentorship, and administrative oversight while ensuring that all operations are conducted in accordance with University policies, applicable legislation, and meets the operational goals of CSO.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Sergeant is responsible for operational and administrative supervision for their team through proactive patrol, crime prevention, responding to emergency situations, overseeing criminal and internal judicial investigations, responding to requests for service from the community and community complaints. The Sergeant is also responsible for monitoring and motivating staff performance, supervising traffic control and special events, ensuring that there is sufficient staffing, and that occurrences are reported and documented in a timely fashion. The incumbent will also liaise with external agencies, the general public and the University communities. In addition, the Sergeant will participate in or assign training for the special constables and dispatchers.
Requirements
Post-secondary education is required (College Diploma in Police Foundations preferred) and five
(5) years of experience in policing or security at an institution of higher learning, or an equivalent combination of education and policing experience.
The successful candidate will also possess a valid Ontario driver's license, Standard First Aid Certificate and a valid C.P.R. Certificate (Basic Rescuer) at the time of hire.
Strong leadership and decision-making abilities
Knowledge of relevant legislation including but not limited to
Trespass to Property Act
Criminal Code of Canada
Occupational Health and Safety
Mental Health
Highway Traffic Act
Excellent communication, Conflict resolution and alternative dispute resolution.
Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, verbal and written communication skills.
Team building experience.
Previous supervision or leadership experience preferred
Investigative and Incident management span of control an asset
Be able to develop, motivate, officers
Promote professionalism, accountability, teamwork and be a positive influence within CSO
The ability to manage performance in a unionized environment.
Acute awareness of privacy and confidentiality.
Ability to perform well under stress and during emergent situations.
Knowledge of and experience with community policing, issues involving youth, gender-based violence and people of diverse backgrounds.
Proficiency with cameras, reporting systems and Microsoft Office applications.
