Full job description

Legal Aid Saskatchewan (LAS) is seeking an experienced and highly skilled Staff Lawyer. This is a two-year (2) term position based in North Battleford. The successful candidate will work primarily in Criminal Law with some Family Services work. Minimum of two years (2) trial and litigation experience is required. The successful candidate will manage conflict files for the North Battleford office and will primarily provide legal services at court locations in Meadow Lake. Some overnight stay in Meadow Lake, North Battleford and Lloydminster may be required.

Our lawyer competitive salary is in the range of $98,927.18 up to $203,233.84 based on years of relevant experience and Call to Bar years. In addition to salary, our generous and comprehensive benefit package includes employer’s paid extended health & dental family coverage; paid sick time; three weeks of paid vacation at the start, plus scheduled or earned days off (12 SDOs or 26 EDOs per year for support staff and 12 SDOs per year for lawyers); 14 Statutory holidays; pension match 6.35%; relocation assistance if applicable and more. Responsibilities

Under the leadership of the Legal Director, key staff lawyer responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Carry a complex criminal caseload including conflict files, and appeals
  • Provide full trial representation at all court levels, across multiple geographic locations
  • Develop litigation strategies in novel and complex areas of criminal law
  • Conduct in-depth legal research and draft high-quality legal materials
  • Support and advise Area Offices on conflict and non-conflict matters
  • Maintain strong digital file management practices in a fully electronic environment
  • Contribute to law reform, practice development, and template creation for conflict files

Position Requirements

  • LL.B. or J.D. and membership in good standing with the Law Society of Saskatchewan
  • Minimum tow (2) years’ experience practicing criminal law and some family law
  • Strong courtroom presence and exceptional advocacy skills
  • Superior written and oral communication abilities
  • Excellent judgment, organization, and time management skills
  • Comfort working independently and collaboratively under tight deadlines
  • Proficiency with legal research tools, MS Office, and digital practice management
  • Willingness and ability to travel, including to remote court locations (including charter aircraft)
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s licence and ability to pass a criminal record check
  • Province-wide mandate with travel to Area Offices and court points as required
  • Exposure to complex, precedent-setting litigation
  • Collaborative, mission-driven legal team focused on client-centred service
