About JK Law

JK Law is a client-focused general practice law firm located in Calgary, Alberta. We are committed to providing practical, responsive and high-quality legal services while treating every client with professionalism, respect and care.

Our principal practice areas include real estate law, wills and estate planning, probate and estate administration, corporate and commercial law and child welfare matters.

We are seeking an experienced, organized and dependable Legal Assistant/Paralegal to join our team as soon as possible. The successful candidate must have at least two years of relevant experience, including meaningful experience in both Alberta real estate conveyancing and wills and estates practice.

The Position

This is a hands-on role for someone who can manage files efficiently, communicate professionally with clients and third parties, meet important deadlines and work independently with limited supervision.

The successful candidate will be expected to assist with residential real estate transactions from opening through completion and reporting, as well as wills, estate planning, probate and estate administration matters and other areas of law.

Key Responsibilities

Real Estate

  • Manage residential purchase, sale, mortgage and refinancing files from opening through closing and final reporting.
  • Review purchase and sale contracts, mortgage instructions, title searches, tax information and other transaction documents.
  • Prepare correspondence, trust conditions, statements of adjustments, transfer and mortgage documents, undertakings, payout requests and closing reports.
  • Communicate with clients, lenders, realtors, mortgage brokers, opposing counsel, condominium corporations, municipalities and other parties.
  • Monitor critical dates, funding requirements, trust conditions, undertakings and post-closing matters.

Wills and Estates

  • Assist with the preparation and execution of wills, Enduring Powers of Attorney and Personal Directives.
  • Open, organize and maintain estate planning, probate and estate administration files.
  • Assist with probate and administration applications, supporting affidavits, notices, correspondence and court filing requirements.
  • Maintain document checklists, limitation dates, filing deadlines and follow-up schedules.

General Responsibilities

  • Maintain complete and accurate electronic and physical files.
  • Schedule appointments, coordinate document signings and manage follow-up tasks.
  • Prepare, proofread and format legal correspondence and documents.
  • Communicate with clients, counsel, courts, registries, financial institutions and other third parties. Generally perform office receptionist functions.
  • Maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment and discretion.
  • Provide administrative and file-management support in other practice areas.

Required Qualifications

  • At least two years of recent experience working as a legal assistant or paralegal in a Canadian law firm.
  • At least two years of practical experience handling Alberta residential real estate transactions.
  • Experience supporting wills and estates matters, including estate planning and/or probate and estate administration.
  • Experience using legal practice-management software such as Cosmolex or Clio.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook and Excel.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational, time-management and file-management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple files and competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative and follow files through to completion.
  • Professional, dependable and client-service oriented.

Assets

  • A Legal Assistant or Paralegal diploma or certificate from a recognized institution.
  • Experience with Alberta Land Titles systems and real estate conveyancing software.
  • Experience in corporate/commercial law.
  • Experience working in a small or general practice law firm.
