Full job description

Job description

Founded in 1882. Built for What’s Next.

LCW, Niagara’s longest-established law firm, is looking for an intermediate to senior Litigation Law Clerk / Legal Assistant to join our St. Catharines office.

You will become a core member of a closely integrated litigation team, working primarily with a senior litigation partner and a litigation associate who collaborate across many files while also managing individual matters.

For someone who has built a career in Niagara—or would simply like to spend less of it commuting—this is an opportunity to do interesting, substantive litigation work close to home, with the resources and support of an established full-service firm.

Why LCW?

  • 35 paid hours per week, Monday to Friday
  • $50,000–$60,000 annual salary, based on experience and qualifications
  • Competitive vacation entitlement that recognizes prior experience
  • Hybrid work arrangements available
  • Comprehensive health, dental, life insurance and employee assistance benefits
  • Dedicated reception, accounting, human resources and internal administrative support
  • The opportunity to become a valued member of a defined and collaborative litigation team

Our firm-wide administrative infrastructure allows our legal professionals to focus more of their time on their files, their clients and the work they were hired to do.

The Practice

The team has a general and commercial civil litigation practice involving a varied range of disputes, including business and contractual matters, construction disputes, estate litigation and other civil proceedings.

This is not a personal injury or insurance defence practice.

You do not need experience in every area in which we practice. Strong civil litigation fundamentals, organization, judgment and the ability to manage files and deadlines are more important to us than experience in any particular type of dispute.

Your Role

You will work directly with the lawyers responsible for the files and play a meaningful role in keeping matters organized, progressing and ready for the next step.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Organizing and managing litigation files, deadlines, filing and service requirements
  • Preparing pleadings, applications, motion materials and other court documents
  • Managing documentary discovery, including affidavits of documents and productions
  • Reviewing transcripts and evidence and preparing summaries, chronologies and undertakings charts
  • Preparing materials for examinations, mediations, pre-trials, motions, hearings and trials
  • Communicating with clients, experts, opposing counsel and court offices

What We’re Looking For

We are particularly interested in an intermediate to senior litigation professional with:

  • Meaningful experience as a Litigation Law Clerk or Legal Assistant
  • Experience with Ontario civil litigation practice and procedure
  • Strong organization, attention to detail and the ability to manage competing deadlines
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Sound professional judgment, initiative and reliability
  • The ability to work independently and collaboratively in a busy litigation practice

A Law Clerk or Legal Assistant diploma is an asset, but relevant litigation experience and demonstrated ability are equally important to us.

Experience in commercial, construction or estate litigation is welcome, but is not required.

If you have strong civil litigation experience but do not match every item above, we still encourage you to apply.

About LCW

LCW is a full-service Niagara law firm with offices in St. Catharines and Welland. Since 1882, we have continued to invest in our people, practices, technology and the systems that support them.

This posting is for an existing vacancy. Artificial intelligence may be used to assist in reviewing application materials; all applications will be reviewed by the firm. Accommodation is available upon request throughout the recruitment process.

Only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

Pay: $50,000.00-$60,000.00 per year

Benefits:

  • Employee assistance program
  • Extended health care
  • Life insurance
  • Paid time off
