Summary of Duties

Seeking a skilled Electrical Project Engineer to spearhead the design and completion of electrical, aerial pole line, and transportation infrastructure projects from concept to finalization. This role demands expertise in illumination (streetlighting), OH/UG Distribution, and Transmission design requirements, as well as Traffic Signal installations, combined with strong problem-solving and communication skills to manage multiple projects simultaneously. You will coordinate with a diverse team of professionals, ensure designs strictly adhere to the LDC, municipal, provincial, CSA, ESA, and AODA standards, and actively contribute to the ongoing development of design efficiencies. Holding a P.Eng license in Ontario (or another Canadian province) is an essential requirement for this opportunity within our growing Engineering department.

General Duties

  • Responsible for the complete project lifecycle of electrical infrastructure projects, including overhead and new underground electrical systems for residential, industrial, and commercial subdivisions, as well as roadway and area lighting.
  • Design of Traffic Signal installations for Intersections and Pedestrian Crossings (PXO’s), Designs for upgrades of existing installations for components of SCATS traffic control systems; Designs for AODA upgrades to existing Traffic Signal installations.
  • Illumination Analysis: Perform and oversee roadway, walkway, and intersection lighting designs utilizing AGi32. Ensure layouts comply with ANSI/IES RP-8-22 (Design of Roadway Facility Lighting) and local municipal streetlighting design criteria
  • Civil & Electrical Integration: Design physical signal components, including concrete pole footings, mast arms, underground electrical conduits, handholes, and vehicle/pedestrian detection loops
  • Grid Infrastructure Design: Lead the design and engineering of overhead and underground electrical distribution lines (typically up to 44 kV/50 kV) utilizing CSA C22.3 No. 1 (Overhead Systems) and CSA C22.3 No. 7 (Underground)
  • Coordinate work activities with Project Managers, Project Coordinators, Senior Designers, Design Supervisors, CAD Designers, and Project Engineers.
  • O. Reg. 22/04 Compliance: Ensure all distribution system plans, equipment specifications, and construction methodologies adhere strictly to safety standards under Ontario Regulation 22/04 (Electrical Distribution Safety)
  • Structural Pole Loading: Oversee structural evaluations, utility line clearance assessments, and pole loading analyses (e.g., using SPIDAcalc) to ensure structures can safely support weather and equipment loads
  • Rigorous QA/QC: Act as the technical authority for all engineering deliverables (drawings, single line diagrams, voltage drop calculations, photometric files, and tender cost estimates) to verify accuracy, completeness, and safety compliance
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of Planview USL’s design standards and methodologies to further develop Electrical and Traffic design and operational efficiencies.
  • Work directly with Jr Engineers, EIT’s, Project Coordinators and other support staff, foster growth of knowledge within Utility Design, ensuring package issuance meets CSA, Ont Reg 22.04, ESA and other applicable federal, local and client driven codes and specifications.
  • Field Inspections & Meetings: Attend site coordination meetings with clients, contractors, and local road authorities. Perform periodic field visits during construction to evaluate physical ground conditions and resolve installation conflicts.
  • Record Drawings & Section 8 Sign-off: Oversee the preparation of “Record Drawings” to document field modifications. Ensure no “As-Built” drawings are sealed unless you or your delegate have verified every physical change on-site in detail
  • Deemed Safe Certification: Inspect completed construction and sign the final Certificate of Approval under O. Reg. 22/04 Section 8, confirming the completed distribution assets are safe to be energized and put into service
  • Review, sign, and seal engineering drawings and documents.
  • Prepare and coordinate all necessary submissions to relevant internal and external parties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Required: Professional Engineer (P.Eng) license in Ontario or another Canadian province, with membership in good standing.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience actively designing electrical distribution systems.
  • 1–4+ years of experience in transportation, traffic signals, or municipal infrastructure.
  • Experience with design of:
  • Traffic Signals (permanent and temporary) and AODA upgrades of these installations; Pedestrian Crossovers (PXO’s), AODA upgrades of PXO’s; Key components of SCATS traffic control systems.
  • Illumination Design-ANSI/IES RP-8-22
  • Distribution and Transmission Design for Local Distribution Companies according to O.Reg 22/04, CSA and LDC Standards
  • Education:
  • University (Engineering) degree from an accredited educational institution.
  • Technical Skills:
  • Required: Familiarity and detailed knowledge of all Toronto Hydro Standards.
  • In-depth understanding of CSA and ESA standards relevant to aerial and buried utility design.
  • Detailed knowledge of codes and regulations governing electrical system design in Ontario.
  • Knowledge of Toronto and Ontario municipal and MTO standards, such as: OTM Book 12, Book 15 and Book 7; City of Toronto Transportation Specifications (TTS, TTD, TTR 800’s); and Ontario Municipal Traffic Design Guidelines.
  • Expertise in performing detailed sag, tension, and pole loading calculations, as well as wind and ice loading calculations.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD and Microstation for design and drafting.
  • Strong command of Google Suite
  • Preferred Skills:
  • Experience on the City of Toronto, or other Municipal and MTO transportation projects.
  • Active transportation design experience.
  • Experience with Streetlighting design and RP-8 Streetlighting Design recommendations.
  • Familiarity with Wiring Diagrams for Traffic Signals for MTO projects.
  • Experience with high voltage substations design and operations.
  • Personal Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to build positive relationships with team members, internal groups, and external agencies.
  • Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and effectively in a virtual team atmosphere.
  • Exceptional time management, with the ability to work effectively under pressure and meet conflicting deadlines.
  • Highly adaptable and able to function in a fast-paced technological environment.
  • Proactive approach to process improvement and efficiency development.

Working Schedule & Location

  • Monday to Friday (8:30 AM to 5:00 PM)
  • Half hour lunch (Unpaid)
  • Location: GTA
