Overview
Yangaroo is seeking a hands-on Technical Engineering Lead to strengthen engineering quality, architecture and delivery across Yangaroo Awards, Yangaroo DMDS and related applications. You will work closely with a small team of developers and QA professionals, serving as the technical connection point among product implementation, code quality, testing, infrastructure and release practices.
This is not a traditional director role and it is not a pure people-management position. It is a senior technical leadership role for someone who enjoys being close to the code, giving precise feedback, solving difficult production and delivery problems, and helping a team move faster without lowering standards.
A major part of the role is reviewing code submitted by team members or generated with AI-assisted development tools. The successful candidate will be able to detect subtle correctness, security, performance, data-integrity and maintainability issues; provide actionable feedback; and build repeatable quality systems.
What you will accomplish
- Maintain and improve the reliable, timely code-review system - protecting production quality while improving developer autonomy and throughput.
- Maintain a practical technical vision across the Yangaroo product lines.
- Improve CI/CD reliability and developer experience, including a staged migration to GitHub Actions.
- Continue cloud infrastructure migrations adding meaningful observability and clear operational ownership.
- Increase delivery velocity through improved engineering practices, automation and safe use of AI-assisted tools.
- Strengthen the working relationship among development, QA, product and infrastructure so that quality and release decisions are shared and evidence-based.
Core responsibilities
Code review and engineering standards
- Ensure software quality through a holistic approach, including rigorous PR reviews, elevated test quality, and improved coverage
- Review and challenge AI-generated code with particular attention to plausible-looking but semantically incorrect behavior, missing edge cases, unsafe assumptions and weak verification.
- Provide detailed, respectful and actionable feedback that explains risk and alternatives while helping developers build independent judgment.
- Establish risk-based review guidelines, examples, checklists, automated quality gates and reviewer rotation so the lead does not become the single bottleneck.
- Create or refine engineering standards for testing, dependency management, secure coding, logging, error handling, database changes and backward-compatible releases.
Architecture and implementation guidance
- Guide technical design for new products, systems and services.
- Maintain architectural coherence across legacy and modern components, choosing incremental refactoring, modular-monolith or service approaches based on business and operational evidence.
- Balance new functionality, production stability, technical debt and platform improvements against the capacity of a small team.
CI/CD, infrastructure and operational quality
- Increase deployment frequency by building release confidence and empowering teams with safe, reliable deployment processes.
- Own or coordinate improvements to build, test, packaging, deployment and rollback workflows across Yangaroo applications.
- Provide technical guidance for cloud migration, containerization, infrastructure as code and Git-based operations without introducing unnecessary platform complexity.
- Participate in production incident diagnosis and follow-through, converting lessons into tests, monitoring, runbooks and owned engineering improvements.
Technical leadership and team enablement
- Provide daily technical guidance and unblock developers and QA without taking over every difficult task.
- Partner with QA early in design and implementation to create risk-based test strategies, reliable test data and meaningful release evidence.
- Mentor developers through reviews, pairing, design discussions and post-incident learning; raise standards while increasing autonomy.
AI-assisted development and developer productivity
- Define practical guardrails for using AI-assisted development tools with proprietary code, sensitive data, tests and production changes.
- Evaluate and pilot tools or workflows that improve code understanding, testing, review quality, incident investigation, documentation or delivery speed.
- Measure whether new tools actually reduce lead time, review rework or escaped defects rather than treating usage volume as success.
Required qualifications
- Eight or more years of professional software-development experience, including sustained senior or technical-lead responsibility.
- Strong current C# and modern .NET experience, including web APIs, asynchronous code, data access, testing and production troubleshooting.
- Demonstrated ability to perform detailed code reviews and communicate feedback that improves both the code and the developer.
- Experience making architecture and modernization decisions for production systems, including legacy code and incremental migration.
- Hands-on CI/CD experience with Git-based workflows, automated testing, deployments, environments, secrets, rollback and release troubleshooting.
- Experience with at least one major cloud platform and practical knowledge of containers and infrastructure automation.
- Experience mentoring developers and coordinating across development, QA, product and infrastructure/operations.
- Strong judgment about security, reliability, data integrity, observability and operational support.
- Practical experience using or governing AI-assisted development tools, or clear evidence of the ability to adopt them critically and safely.
- Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to document decisions and explain trade-offs.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience modernizing TeamCity, Octopus Deploy or comparable legacy CI/CD tooling.
- Experience with GitOps, infrastructure as code, Kubernetes, deployment-control systems or progressive delivery.
- Experience designing modular monoliths, microservices or event-driven systems and choosing appropriately among them.
- Experience with security/static-analysis tooling, dependency scanning, contract testing, end-to-end testing and observability.
- Experience supporting event-driven or high-volume systems, complex data workflows, media technology or submission/awards platforms.
- Some full-stack experience in JavaScript/TypeScript and modern web UI frameworks.
Pay: $130,000.00-$165,000.00 per year
Benefits:
- Dental care
- Disability insurance
- Flexible schedule
- Life insurance
- Paid time off
