What You Need To Know (Overview)

This position has become available on short notice. Dr. Kelly needs to hire someone soon. It is a good job for someone seeking experience in a psychology practice. You will work closely with Dr. Kelly to help him conduct psychological assessments of people who have been in motor vehicle accidents. Your role is to use a semi-structured interview to collect information and administer symptom checklists. (Dr. Kelly also meets with the interviewee.) You will also draft sections of the report based on the information you collect. Dr. Kelly will provide you with ongoing feedback and training. The office is well run, and everyone is kind and friendly.

Over one hundred people will probably apply for this job. Many will be disqualified because they won’t fully complete the application process. There are only two steps, but for whatever reason, a lot of people don’t complete them. If you complete both steps, you will have a fair shot at being considered for this job. The steps are to write a personal cover letter and to complete a writing assignment. (See below for detailed instructions.) If you complete both steps, Dr. Kelly will personally read your application and give you feedback. People who are seriously interested in the job will likely spend two plus hours working on their application.

Step 1: Cover Letter

The cover letter is your chance to tell Dr. Kelly about yourself and why you want this job. How does the job fit with your education/life plans? Where do you see yourself in 1-3 years? What have you done previously that would help you with this role? What are your broader interests and goals.

Our office is at 481 University Ave. in downtown Toronto. What is your estimated door-to-door travel time, and how do you plan to get to work?

What is your verified touch-typing speed and accuracy (e.g., “72 WPM at 98%”.) Include the site used for verification (e.g., Monkeytype, TypingTest.com).

Also include standard resume information.

Did you use any AI tools to assist with preparing your resume or cover letter (not the accident report)? Yes or No. If yes, which tool(s) and for what purpose? The writing assignment, explained below, must be completed without any AI assistance. Confirm that you wrote it entirely on your own.

Step 2: Writing Assignment

If you are hired for this position, you will interview people by following a semi-structured interview form, make notes as they talk, and then write sections of the report based on your notes. This writing assignment is your opportunity to show Dr. Kelly that you are an adequate writer. He is not looking for a perfect writer. He can help you improve if you have an adequate foundation.

Dr. Kelly has recorded a simulated interview about a car accident. Listen to the interview and then write an account of the accident event based on what you heard. Capture the key facts, what happened, how, and any relevant details. There is no required length or format. Write it in whatever way best reflects your ability to listen carefully and document information clearly and accurately. You may listen to the interview as many times as you like.

Don’t use any AI tools to produce the report or to assist you with writing. Write the account by yourself, from your own notes. If you are selected for an in-office interview, you will be asked to complete a similar task again, at Dr. Kelly’s office, without AI access. Your two submissions will be compared.

You can find the simulated interview at this link. The clip lasts about 5 minutes. It shows a static picture and you can hear Dr. Kelly playing the role of a person who was in a car accident:

This writing assignment is your opportunity so show that you can listen carefully, organize what you have learned, and present it clearly. Dr. Kelly will review your report carefully and you will be short-listed based on the writing assignment and your cover letter.

Include your report about the accident details as a section in your cover letter.

See below for additional information about the job.
