- Up to 40 hours per week – Dependent on program needs
- Orientation will take place on select evenings and weekends in May and June 2026

The Opportunity
The City of Selkirk is currently in search of an Aquatic Instructor to join our team. Under the direction of the Program Coordinator, the Aquatic Instructor shall be responsible for successful instruction of learn to swim programming, customer service, emergency response, proper reporting and documentation, and facility cleaning/upkeep at the Selkirk Park Pool & Splash Pad.
Job Duties

- Prepare and follow a creative lesson plan for each class within accepted program provider standards, and City of
- Conduct classes to meet the needs, ages, and level of development of the participants in the class.
- Integrate special needs participants into mainstream programs, accommodating their needs as well as those of
- Responsible for class safety at all times. Instructors must be continually aware of actual or potential dangers to
concerns, potential accidents or collisions.
- Maintain neat, complete and accurate records of attendance and progress for all participants including
- Ensure all comments on report cards are relevant and written clearly with proper spelling.
- Complete all learn to swim worksheets and leaderships test sheets and submit on the last day of the program
- Complete all paperwork.
- Review and discuss the participant’s course evaluation with the parents/guardians and/or participants, as
- Attend all scheduled classes in a punctual manner, fully prepared to teach with an appropriate lesson plan.
- Follow the appropriate channels of communication in dealing with staff and public. Concerns are forwarded to the
- Work as part of the Aquatic Services team and ensure good communications with other instructors, lifeguards
- Alert the Program Coordinator of any problem that is either a potential danger to participants or a disruption of

- Implement and enforce all rules, regulations and policies of the City of Selkirk governing conduct of persons
- Assist with the promotion of water safety education.
- Provide education to the public regarding safe practices and water smart education.
- Perform water rescue and administer first aid as required.
- Maintain cleanliness of the pool and surrounding area including but not limited to skimming, vacuuming,
- Assist the Supervisor with the enforcement of rules and regulations of the pool as necessary.
- Complete appropriate reports relating to accidents, first aid, daily logbook and facility inspection logs.
- Observe and maintain guarding rotations and regulations surrounding ratios and safety.
3 - Customer Service
- Maintain effective public relations employing tactful, polite and helpful demeanor.
- Educate the public with respect to the content of programs offered by the City of Selkirk
4 - Perform other related duties as may be assigned.
Qualifications/Minimum Requirements
- 15 years of age or older
- Valid CPR-C Level or higher, in accordance with the standards set by the International Liaison Committee of
- Valid Standard First Aid Certification from one of the following:
- St. John Ambulance Standard First Aid Certificate
- Red Cross Standard First Aid Certificate
- Lifesaving Society Aquatic Emergency Care Certificate
- Lifesaving Society Standard First Aid Certificate
- CritiCare Inc. Standard First Aid Certificate
- Safety Services Manitoba Standard First Aid Certificate
- Heart Beat Inc. Manitoba Standard First Aid Certificate
- Valid Swim for Life Instructor and/or Lifesaving Instructor Certification
- Clear Current Child Abuse Registry Check
- Clear Current Criminal Record Check
- Must be physically able to perform all the laboring aspects or other duties associated with the position
- Must be prepared to reach and demonstrate in or out of the water to meet the needs of the class.
- Must attend all staff training sessions as posted.
- Must have an understanding of City of Selkirk policies, emergency procedures, and fire safety plan, and respond
Comments
This is a Casual Non-Union position ranging from May to September 2026, working various hours up to 40 hours a week based on a flexible schedule.
This position requires the individual to work outdoors and in an outdoor pool environment.
Due to the nature of the position, irregular working hours are required, including evening and weekend shifts, as the facility operates 7 days a week. This position will be required to work on Canada Day, August and September long weekends.
This position is excluded from the Collective Agreement and is open to all applicants. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
