Senior Geotechnical Engineer
SE Design and Consulting Inc. (SE Design) is an established multidisciplinary civil and municipal consulting firm providing engineering, project management, geomatics, geotechnical, and consulting services primarily throughout northeastern Alberta and the Lakeland Region, with continued expansion across northern Alberta. We pride ourselves on being innovative and capable of tackling new challenges, developing long-term relationships with our clients, and strengthening communities through quality project delivery and meaningful engagement. We provide consulting services from project inception to completion, beginning with preliminary engineering, planning, and concept development, followed by detailed engineering design, tendering, and project and construction management, all delivered through a client-centred, value-added, and cohesive approach. If you are looking for a long-term career with a supportive and close-knit team of technical and professional staff where you can continue to grow, SE Design may be the right fit for you. We believe in treating our employees like family, and we offer unique benefits that support a healthy balance between personal life and a rewarding, fulfilling career.
SE Design has a career opportunity for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join our associated Geotechnical Engineering Firm, ENC Testing Inc. in our Sherwood Park, Alberta office.
Position Description:
· We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Geotechnical Engineer to lead geotechnical investigations, construction materials testing, engineering analysis, technical reporting, and construction review for a diverse range of municipal, transportation, commercial, industrial, land development, and infrastructure projects throughout Alberta.
· The successful candidate will be a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with extensive practical geotechnical engineering experience and will serve as the CCIL Responsible Professional for our accredited materials testing laboratory. This role will provide technical leadership in maintaining laboratory quality management systems, regulatory compliance, and industry certification standards while supporting the continued growth of ENC’s geotechnical and materials testing services.
· The successful candidate will lead and oversee geotechnical field investigations, review subsurface conditions, evaluate foundation systems, settlement behaviour, slope stability, pavement structures, and earthworks, and provide practical, technically sound engineering recommendations for a wide variety of projects.
· This position requires a strong technical report writer with demonstrated experience preparing and reviewing geotechnical investigation reports, engineering analyses, technical memoranda, construction recommendations, specifications, proposals, tender documents, and other professional engineering deliverables.
· The role includes a combination of field investigations, engineering analysis, project management, laboratory oversight, construction review, proposal preparation, client consultation, and collaboration with SE Design's civil engineering, geomatics, and construction services teams.
· The successful candidate will mentor junior engineers, engineers-in-training, technologists, laboratory personnel, and field staff while providing technical leadership and maintaining the highest standards of engineering practice, quality assurance, and workplace safety.
· This position offers the opportunity to build strong client relationships, contribute to business development initiatives, and play a key leadership role in the continued expansion of SE Design's geotechnical engineering and materials testing practice.
· Periodic travel throughout Alberta will be required to support field investigations, construction review, client meetings, and project delivery.
Position Duties:
· Lead the planning, coordination, and completion of geotechnical field investigations, including borehole drilling programs, test pits, soil sampling, groundwater monitoring, field logging, and in-situ testing for municipal, transportation, commercial, industrial, and land development projects.
· Plan, supervise, interpret, and review field investigations, including borehole logs, field notes, groundwater observations, site sketches, photographs, and other technical documentation prepared by technical staff.
· Coordinate, review, and interpret laboratory testing results for soils, aggregates, asphalt, concrete, and other construction materials, incorporating findings into practical engineering recommendations.
· Oversee laboratory testing activities, including sample receiving, preparation, documentation, testing coordination, quality control, results tracking, and communication with laboratory personnel to ensure timely, accurate, and reliable reporting.
· Perform advanced geotechnical engineering analyses and develop engineering recommendations related to shallow and deep foundations, settlement, bearing capacity, slope stability, retaining structures, embankment design, pavement structures, subgrade preparation, and earthworks.
· Prepare, review, and provide professional sign-off on geotechnical investigation reports, engineering analyses, technical memoranda, specifications, construction recommendations, proposals, tender documents, and other technical deliverables.
· Provide senior-level construction review and field engineering services during earthworks, foundation construction, utility installation, pavement construction, and other civil infrastructure projects to ensure compliance with project specifications and applicable standards.
· Coordinate multidisciplinary projects and communicate effectively with project managers, civil and structural engineers, surveyors, environmental professionals, contractors, laboratories, regulatory agencies, clients, and sub-consultants to support successful project delivery.
· Prepare project proposals, scopes of work, cost estimates, schedules, work plans, and budgets, while monitoring project progress, resource allocation, and client expectations throughout project execution.
· Mentor and provide technical leadership to junior engineers, engineers-in-training, technologists, laboratory personnel, and field staff, promoting professional development and maintaining high technical standards.
· Support business development activities by assisting with client meetings, proposal preparation, presentations, and the development of new project opportunities.
· Ensure all engineering work is completed in accordance with APEGA requirements, applicable CSA, ASTM, CCIL, and municipal standards, SE Design's Quality Management System, and all health and safety policies and regulatory requirements.
· Demonstrate strong technical judgment, professionalism, leadership, and a commitment to delivering practical, high-quality engineering solutions while fostering positive client relationships and supporting the continued growth of SE Design's geotechnical and materials testing services.
Qualifications:
· Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an accredited Canadian university.
· Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing with APEGA, or eligible for immediate registration through interprovincial mobility.
· CCIL Certified Responsible Professional (CCIL Type Q or equivalent) with experience overseeing an accredited materials testing laboratory.
· Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in geotechnical engineering, construction materials testing, and construction review within a consulting environment.
· Demonstrated experience leading geotechnical investigations, including borehole drilling programs, field investigations, subsurface characterization, groundwater assessments, and geotechnical instrumentation.
· Strong practical experience in geotechnical engineering analyses, including shallow and deep foundation design, settlement assessments, bearing capacity, slope stability, retaining structures, embankment design, pavement engineering, subgrade evaluation, and earthworks.
· Extensive experience interpreting laboratory testing results for soils, aggregates, asphalt, and concrete, and incorporating findings into practical engineering recommendations.
· Proven experience preparing and reviewing geotechnical investigation reports, engineering analyses, technical memoranda, specifications, proposals, construction review reports, and other technical documentation.
· Demonstrated experience providing construction review services for earthworks, foundation construction, utility installation, pavement construction, and municipal infrastructure projects.
· Experience supervising and mentoring engineers, engineers-in-training, technologists, laboratory personnel, and field staff.
· Strong understanding of applicable CSA, ASTM, AASHTO, CCIL, and Alberta Transportation specifications, as well as municipal engineering standards and construction practices.
· Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously, including preparing proposals, work plans, project budgets, schedules, and client communications.
· Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to build and maintain positive relationships with clients, contractors, regulatory agencies, and multidisciplinary project teams.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with exceptional technical report writing and presentation abilities.
· Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and geotechnical software such as gINT, OpenGround, GeoStudio, and AutoCAD Civil 3D. Experience with GIS and other engineering software would be considered an asset.
· Ability to travel throughout Alberta and work outdoors in varying weather conditions as required.
· Valid Class 5 driver's licence with a clean driving record.
· Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, continuous improvement, and ongoing professional development.
Compensation:
· Competitive salary commensurate with experience, qualifications, professional registration, and CCIL Responsible Professional designation.
· Comprehensive benefits package including corporate RRSP matching, extended health and prescription drug coverage, dental care, long-term disability insurance, life insurance, dependent life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance, and an employee and family assistance program.
· Annual professional membership and licensing fees, including APEGA and applicable professional association dues.
· Support for continuing education, technical training, conferences, and professional development to maintain engineering and CCIL certifications.
· Opportunity to lead and grow SE Design's geotechnical engineering and materials testing practice while working on a diverse portfolio of municipal, transportation, commercial, industrial, and land development projects throughout Alberta.
· Collaborative, multidisciplinary work environment with opportunities for technical leadership, business development, and long-term career growth within an established consulting firm.
