Full job description

Position Overview

GCE is seeking a highly skilled and leadership-driven Lead Surveyor to spearhead our geomatics and surveying division. This role requires a senior technical expert who will take full ownership of field operations, advanced data processing, and crew supervision. You will serve as the primary technical authority on-site, a mentor to junior staff, and the direct liaison between GCE and our high-profile clients.

Successful candidate needs to be a master of control networks, a Civil 3D power-user, and a natural leader who thrives on precision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily operations of field crews; manage scheduling, task delegation, and resource allocation to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Train, mentor, and audit the work of junior surveyors and field technicians to maintain GCE’s high standards of accuracy.
  • Enforce strict adherence to site-specific health, safety, and regulatory policies, ensuring all crew members operate safely.
  • Establish, expand, and maintain highly accurate control networks.
  • Direct and execute complex boundary, topographic, construction layout, and monitoring surveys using advanced Robotic Total Stations, GNSS/GPS receivers, drones, and other equipment.
  • Oversee the calibration, maintenance, inventory tracking, and management of all high-end surveying instruments and equipment.
  • Take full ownership of raw data post-processing, generating as-builts, adjustment of survey networks (least squares adjustments), and data analysis using Autodesk Civil 3D and specialized survey software.
  • Prepare, review, and certify final survey plans, volume calculations, and CAD drawings for engineering and construction teams.
  • Assist with the integration of surveying department with other GCE engineering and specialties functions.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, project managers, and engineers regarding survey methodologies, progress updates, and technical discrepancies.
  • Resolve complex conflicts on-site and provide strategic technical advice to clients.

Qualifications

  • Degree or Diploma in Geomatics Engineering, Surveying Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering, or a strictly related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in construction surveying, geodetic control, and engineering surveys, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or lead capacity.
  • Advanced, expert-level proficiency in Autodesk Civil 3D, Leica Captivate/Trimble Access, and network adjustment software.
  • Deep understanding of coordinate systems, projections, datums, and the establishment of high-precision control networks.
  • OLS (Ontario Land Surveyor) designation or working towards it is considered a major asset, though equivalent senior field/processing experience is highly valued.
  • Proven track record of managing field crews, handling stressful project timelines, and interfacing directly with clients.
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License (Class G) with a clean driving record.

Working Conditions

  • Splitting time between high-level field operations/client meetings and office-based data processing/crew scheduling.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in diverse Ontario weather conditions when leading field operations.
  • Remain flexible toward evening and weekend work.

Work Location: In person
