Full job description
Mennonite Seniors Housing Network (MSHN), in partnership with the WRHA, operates South Oak Inn (SOI)—a dedicated meal program providing dining experiences Monday to Friday for Bethel Place residents and their guests.
We strive to be a community-minded, close-knit team that values good food, quality ingredients, and connection. Our kitchen works hand-in-hand with a wonderful group of dedicated community volunteers who serve meals in our dining room and bring warmth to our residents' day. We are searching for a leader who brings fresh creativity to the table, but who also deeply appreciates traditional recipes passed down through decades and values the community spirit that defines us.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a talented, organized, and experienced kitchen manager/chef to manage and lead our culinary team and our dining room volunteers. If you have a passion for food, strong leadership skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a welcoming, community-focused kitchen, we want to hear from you!
Key Responsibilities
- Operations: Oversee all daily kitchen operations, ensuring high-quality, consistent food preparation and presentation.
- Menu Development: Bring creativity to the kitchen by developing innovative meal features while honoring traditional favorites.
- Volunteer Coordination: Provide support to the dedicated volunteers who serve in the dining room, ensuring they are supported, informed, and welcomed as part of the meal service team.
- Financials & Inventory: Manage inventory, order supplies, and closely monitor food and labor cost percentages.
- Team Leadership: Train, mentor, supervise, and schedule kitchen staff, fostering a positive, productive, and fun work environment.
Safety & Compliance: Maintain strict compliance with provincial food safety regulations and keep the kitchen clean and inspection-ready at all times.
- Collaboration: Work alongside Management to implement efficiency improvements and ensure seamless service, hospitality, and resident satisfaction.
- Community: Participate in community and charitable events integral to MSHN’s mission.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Experience: Minimum of 3 years of kitchen experience (Required), with proven experience as a Kitchen Manager or in a similar leadership role.
- People Skills: Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to lead a diverse team of paid staff and interact warmly and respectfully with community volunteers.
- Cultural Asset: Experience and knowledge in traditional Mennonite cooking is considered a strong asset.
- Skills: Robust knowledge of kitchen operations, inventory management, and labor/food cost controls.
- Certification: Valid Food Handler Certification (Required).
- Language: Professional English proficiency (Required).
- Mindset: A strong passion for hospitality, a commitment to exceptional dining, and a desire to innovate and have fun!
Why Work With Us?
- Predictable Schedule: Enjoy a rare culinary schedule—Monday to Friday hours with your weekends off!
- Great Culture: Work with a supportive, close-knit staff and a heartwarming network of volunteers making a meaningful impact daily in the lives of seniors.
