This position is a IAFF 80 position and will be filled in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Should it not be filled in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, external candidates will be considered.
Job Summary
Under supervision of the Assistant Chief, Staff Development and Safety, this position is responsible and accountable for performing functions and duties related to the planning, development, delivery and evaluation of training and certification. This positions primary focus will be related to activities in the area of Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) Response; however, will assist in other areas as required.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Plans, develops, coordinates, facilitates, and evaluates the delivery of Hazmat training within the department.
- Researches industry trends and standards for inclusion in the creation of training curriculum and lessons.
- Ensures that all training functions are conducted safely and efficiently in conformance with the Department Safety Policy, Department Work Standards, applicable NFPA Standards and applicable Acts, Regulations or adopted governance.
- Formats training lessons and curriculum into Learning Management System.
- Assists Department Company Officers with the planning and facilitation of training or practical drill sessions.
- Provides direct training, drills and in-services for Operations On-Shift Instructors.
- Oversees specialized projects and collaborates with SFD employees on behalf of the department.
- Provides and prepares reports, and other required documentation, for review by the Assistant Chief.
- Assists with the development of evaluation instruments as required to ensure validity and reliability.
- Conducts training programs on new equipment and techniques implemented in the Department.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Firefighter 1st Class designation within the Department.
- Possession of Fire Services Instructor Level I (NFPA 1041), IFSAC and/or ProBoard accredited.
- Must attain the following within one year of accepting this position:
- Fire Service Instructor Level II (NFPA 1041), IFSAC and/or ProBoard accredited.
- Completion of, and certification from, a recognized extension program in Adult Education would be an asset.
- Currently involved in the department’s Hazmat Program at a Technician level.
- Several years' progressive experience within the Fire Operations Division. Previous experience as an OSI, Coordinator or FSI would be seen as an asset.
- Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
- Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.
- Knowledge of current strategies and tactics utilized by the Saskatoon Fire Department.
- Knowledge of current adult education development instructional methodologies.
- Considerable knowledge of Fire Department policies and procedures.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Department personnel.
- Ability to adapt to changing technology.
- Demonstrated ability in the design and delivery of training and development programs.
- Demonstrated ability to develop positive working relationships with internal and external agencies and individuals.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in written form through reports and correspondence.
- Demonstrated skill in the use of a computer for editing documents (Microsoft Word) and data input (Microsoft, SharePoint, Outlook, Excel, Articulate 360 and Vector Solutions).
Weekly Hours: 37.5
Salary Range: $136,158.72 to $139,506.96 CAD per annum (2023 rates)
