Financial Controller – 15-Month Defined-Term Assignment

Position Overview

Our client is a large faith-based charitable organization with multiple operating divisions, including Islamic schools, mosques, and community programs. The organization is seeking an experienced Financial Controller for a 15-month defined-term assignment, with the potential for extension depending on organizational needs and future planning.

This is a key leadership role responsible for ensuring financial stewardship, operational stability, and strong financial governance across the organization. The Financial Controller will oversee the full accounting function, ensuring regulatory compliance, effective financial controls, and long-term financial sustainability.

Reporting to senior leadership, the role provides clear financial reporting, risk visibility, and decision support to management and the Board of Directors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee the accounting function, including a team of 15+ staff, ensuring effective performance, development, and accountability.
  • Manage all day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial records.
  • Prepare and deliver monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting packages, including meaningful analysis and insights for leadership and the Board.
  • Maintain financial records in accordance with GAAP and applicable CRA charitable reporting requirements.
  • Oversee the preparation and tracking of restricted and unrestricted funds, ensuring proper allocation and donor compliance.
  • Manage cash flow, liquidity, and working capital to support operational requirements and reserve targets.
  • Oversee banking relationships, reconciliations, and overall treasury and cash management activities.
  • Design, implement, and maintain internal control frameworks to safeguard organizational assets and mitigate financial risk.
  • Lead the annual audit process efficiently, including preparation, coordination with external auditors, and resolution of findings.
  • Ensure compliance with all statutory and regulatory obligations, including CRA filings, payroll remittances, donation receipts, and tax requirements.
  • Develop and maintain financial dashboards and KPIs to support transparency and performance monitoring across different cost centers.
  • Support continuous improvement and automation of financial systems, processes, and reporting tools to enhance efficiency and scalability.
  • Provide leadership, mentoring, and development for the finance team.

Candidate Profile

  • CPA designation or equivalent professional accounting qualification preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive financial management experience, including at least 4 years in a managerial position.
  • Significant financial leadership experience within charitable, nonprofit, faith-based organizations is considered a strong asset.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian charitable compliance requirements, CRA regulations, donor funding structures, and fund accounting principles.
  • Proven experience managing consolidated reporting, audits, and complex financial environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop finance teams.
  • Experience presenting to Boards or Finance Committees is an asset.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate complex financial information into clear insights for non-financial stakeholders.
  • Comfortable working in evolving environments with competing priorities and stakeholder needs.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and accountability.

Contract Details

  • Duration: 15-month defined-term assignment, with the possibility of extension
  • Location: Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Ontario. This is an on-site position; remote work is not available.
  • Compensation: Competitive for a defined-term assignment, aligned with experience and scope of responsibility
