Job Overview:

The Family Support Relative, under the supervision of the Health Director, focuses on improving the holistic health—physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual—of Fort McMurray #468 First Nation individuals and families through culturally safe, preventative, and community-based services. The primary focus is strengthening the family to stay together by providing and connecting families to support and services that empower the family. Using a lens that acknowledges intergenerational trauma and supports the whole person, this role is rooted in the communities unique Cree & Dene worldviews, aims to strengthen family units, restore traditional parenting practices, prevent child apprehension, and foster healing from intergenerational trauma.

Responsibilities:

· Build positive relationships with families requiring support or identified as at risk through various referral sources including but not limited to self, community, school and other referral sources, & engage in a consent-based intake process that will highlight the barriers preventing holistic family wellness

· Provide direct support, advocacy and case management by walking with families to develop, monitor and evaluate individualized, strength-based family care plans

· Help families navigate complex systems, including Child and Family Services, Jordan’s Principal, healthcare, justice and housing to reduce barriers to care

· Connect with local Elders, Knowledge Keepers and Community members to plan & offer cultural teachings, workshops, healing circles, and land-based activities

· Coordinate workshops on life skills, traditional parenting, anger management, and healthy relationships

· Provide immediate support in situations of family violence, trauma, or mental health crises

· Work closely and build meaningful relationships with Elders, community knowledge keepers, health professionals, and other service providers

· Applies non-judgmental, person centered approaches to support families experiencing substance use and mental health

· Work alongside Children’s Services case workers on active or transition files involving community members, providing a holistic, family-centered perspective that complements the child-focused mandate of Children’s Services. Advocate for the child and their family to ensure the Nation’s cultural teachings, traditions, and values are upheld and meaningfully integrated into case planning and supports

· Maintain confidential, accurate client records, progress notes, and administrative reports

· Provide latest program information and updated statistics as required

· Attend scheduled staff meetings and perform other duties as required

Requirements:

· Degree or diploma in a Human Services field is a must (Social work, Child & Youth care)

· Must provide proof of active registration with the Alberta College of Social Workers or other regulating body and maintain registration throughout the term of employment.

· 3-5 years work-related experience is required

· Recent satisfactory criminal record check including vulnerable sector check required

· Strong interpersonal skills with good oral and written communication

· Valid First Aid/CPR Required

· Experience working in an Indigenous Community including knowledge of First Nations Culture, traditions and values is considered an asset

· Must possess strong assessment, communication, organizational, problem solving, and counselling skills.

· Must be able to work both independently and as a part of a team and possess a good understanding of the determinants of health.

· Able to work positively, effectively and cooperatively within an interdisciplinary team.

· Knowledge of computer applications, including basic word processing, email, electronic charting, internet access, and data entry required.

· Willing to obtain a class 4 driver’s license

· Ability to work a variety of shifts including daytime, evening and on-call on alternating weekends.

· Successful candidate will be required to travel to Fort McMurray #468 First Nation daily
