Structural Engineering-in-Training (EIT)

Overview

The Structural Engineering-in-Training (EIT) supports the planning, analysis, design, and inspection of structural systems for a variety of projects, including buildings, industrial facilities, bridges, and other infrastructure. Working under the supervision of a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), the EIT applies engineering principles, industry standards, and design codes to develop safe, efficient, and economical structural solutions. This role provides an opportunity to gain practical experience toward professional engineering licensure while contributing to multidisciplinary project teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the structural analysis and design of steel, concrete, timber, and masonry structures.
  • Prepare engineering calculations, design reports, technical specifications, and construction drawings.
  • Perform load calculations, structural modeling, and design checks using engineering software.
  • Support the development of structural layouts, details, and construction documents in coordination with drafting and design teams.
  • Conduct site visits, field reviews, inspections, and condition assessments to evaluate existing structures and monitor construction activities.
  • Assist in the preparation of engineering studies, feasibility assessments, and technical reports.
  • Review drawings, shop drawings, and contractor submittals for compliance with project requirements.
  • Coordinate with clients, contractors, architects, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable building codes, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and quality control activities.
  • Participate in risk assessments, constructability reviews, and problem-solving during design and construction phases.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation and records.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a specialization or focus in Structural Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Registered or eligible for registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) with the applicable provincial or state engineering association.

Experience

  • 1–4 years of relevant structural engineering experience, including co-op or internship experience.
  • Experience with structural design and analysis of buildings, industrial facilities, or infrastructure projects is considered an asset.

Technical Skills

  • Knowledge of structural engineering principles, design methodologies, and construction practices.
  • Familiarity with applicable design codes and
  • Experience with structural analysis and design software (e.g SAFI)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, or BIM software is considered an asset.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
