Position Profile

The Technical Design Manager is responsible for leading solar PV and battery energy storage system design from early-stage sales feasibility through detailed engineering and construction support. This role bridges Sales, Engineering, and Operations, ensuring technical accuracy, design quality, and continuity across all project phases.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Design Department including managing direct reports, department workflow & design outputs.
  • Oversee detailed Solar PV and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) design, including supporting equipment selection, sizing, and system optimization. Apply knowledge of supply chains & competitive market rates for materials & equipment.
  • Attend all design team meetings and ensure project continuity from sales through design into construction.
  • Coordinate and review work completed by System Designers and internal design resources.
  • Oversee utility interconnection processes including applications, plan reviews, and SCADA coordination.
  • Oversee the coordination of racking drawing packages and distribution equipment shop drawing packages.
  • Oversee quality control, version control, and release of IFR and IFC design packages.
  • Coordinate with external structural engineering resources.
  • Establish and manage external engineering resources as necessary across North America.
  • Ensure compliance with utility standards, CSA, OESC, CEC, NEC and other applicable codes.
  • Ensuring designs align with customer expectations, and quoted system details.
  • Support construction activities, respond to field design changes, and assist with commissioning and troubleshooting.
  • Support RESCo’s Sales Department in their preparation of custom quotes, proposals, and formal Request for Proposal (RFP) responses for all RESCo services (Solar PV, BESS, EV Charging, and Preventative Maintenance solutions) by providing design methodologies and design intent content.
  • Perform sales feasibility work:
  • Using Helioscope, PVSYST and CAD software to prepare custom, preliminary solar PV designs.
  • Create preliminary production, load and renewable fraction estimates.
  • Attend site to gather necessary information such as measurements, electrical interconnection details and basic structural information.
  • Prepare detailed financial models, compiling inputs from other department resources.
  • Analyze solar feasibility, including structural, electrical, roofing, utility interconnection and billing data analysis.
  • Support the evaluation of bids, tenders and RFP opportunities.
  • Support the generation of Project Kick-Off Forms for handoff to Operations Department upon contract award.

Qualifications

  • P.Eng registration with PEO or CET designation considered an asset.
  • Strong interest and experience in renewable energy system design.
  • Advanced proficiency with AutoCAD, Helioscope, PVSyst, Microsoft Excel and Outlook.
  • Solid knowledge of utility interconnection requirements and electrical protection considerations; familiar with the Canadian Electrical Code and National Electrical Code.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license.
  • Ability to travel.
